Excerpt Chapter 1 George Watkins returned to his hotel room at the Waldorf in New York City, tired but gratified that his speech had gone so well. The CEO of the investment firm he worked for was considering giving George the promotion he coveted, and tonight might just solidify that decision. His bed had been turned down and a chocolate mint left on the pillow. He smiled, ate the mint, and then threw himself on the bed with a sigh of relief that the evening was over. After a few more obligatory meetings and some necessary networking, he could go home, probably the day after tomorrow. He thought about having a drink but decided that he had imbibed enough liquor that evening. The red light blinking on the phone caught his attention. Probably his wife. After twenty years of marriage, they still missed each other when they were apart. He smiled as he pressed nine and a recorded voice said he had a message. After a brief pause, he was surprised to hear his mother’s voice, shaky and barely audible. “George, I want you to come over as soon as you get back in town.” She whispered so softly that he barely heard the words. The message continued. “I’ve made a terrible mistake. I have rewritten my will and had it witnessed by two of the neighbor ladies. I’m going to put it in a secure place. When you get here, we’ll go to the lawyer and have it properly executed.” George could tell by the tone of her voice that something was wrong. She was recently behaving in an erratic manner. She would stop in the middle of a conversation, stare at nothing, then say "You wouldn't understand."
