Overconfidence breeds arrogance and complacency.
Tennessee author Sam B. Miller II made his literary debut with his book, THE ORIGIN OF F.O.R.C.E. and he now graciously offers the second installment in this series with DAWN OF CHRYSALIS. Sam received his education firm the University of Tennessee - Bachelor of Science degree in Finance, and a Master of Business Administration degree in Finance. There is no evidence form his biographical data that he has published articles or short stories on the genre he has chosen for his books of science fiction, but it is evident that he has a keen interest in fantasy and how fantasy can prophecy possible reality.

Science Fiction tales, being fantasy, require strange names for creatures from planets other than our own. Some writers stumble on these strange names, making them almost hieroglyphic, and that is one of the first signs that Sam is headed in a successful direction with this series. His names from the `other planet' are well considered manipulations of letters and the organization of the title is Federal Organization or Response to Celestial Enemies.

Another aspect of success in sci-fi writing is relating the created story to facts and real places - something that gives the reader the opportunity to get involved readily. Gaining a one up on his fellow sci-fi authors he opens this sparkling book with actual color images of both the Chrysallaman Scout Saucer and the Chrysalmam Mother Ship, drawing his reader into the possibilities that what we are about to read is not mere fantasy! Na in his opening chapter he offers substantial background to support his story. Chapter 1 – Selection: ‘No light glimmered from the dark gray, smooth surface of the liner's hull. Not a single sign of life, not a single discharge of energy emanated from the craft to draw attention to it. For all intents and purposes, the huge spacecraft filled with 100,000 Chrysallaman colonists might as well have been a lifeless asteroid. Untended and forgotten, in seventy years the fusion generators providing power to the stasis pods maintaining the life functions of the sleeping colonists would cease to preserve them, and the CSF Rkksshaw would become truly lifeless. The Federal Organization for Response to Celestial Enemies, popularly known as F.O.R.C.E. to the people of Earth, was not about to let the Chrysallamans go untended and forgotten. Chrysallamans are a warrior race of beings best described as man-sized, tail-less iguanas. As a result of their vocal chords and tongues being unsuited for verbal interaction, evolution had compensated by developing their ability to communicate telepathically. Over several thousands of years, the Chrysallamans learned to
telepathically control the brains of other living beings and used the ability to conquer the peoples of several planets, turning the slave-like survivors into an organic food source as the Chrysallamans colonized the conquered worlds. Superior technology coupled with unmatched mind control made victories extremely easy. The Chrysallamans happened upon Earth, a very nice planet ideally suited for colonization populated by, and this is a direct quote from the logs of Hisspat Zeck, commander of the discovery expedition, a primitive, animalistic culture so physically and technologically inferior they truly deserved to be annihilated to make room for the Chrysallamans.’
In this way Sam has piqued our interest and glued our imagination to the tale he is about to unfold.

This is an especially fine follow-up novel in Sam’s series, blending fact, possible fact, humor, mystery, high-class fantasy and human interest into one very successful novel. The third installment is in process! Grady Harp, September 16

Great story telling - highly satisfying
I was already drawn to this book by its cover, and it proved a good choice.It’s one of those human race facing the end type sci-fi novels, and I can never get enough of them.
All the more when they are well put together, and in his second novel in this series, Sam Miller shows a growing maturity in his handling of plot and portrayals of his characters.
For a fan of classic authors like Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke and Greg Bear, I am often slightly disappointed with other sci-fi series, but not this time.
It’s great to see new talents like Miller on the scene and I hope he rises up the ranks. Awesome.

Human nature is to fight for survival.
I finally got to read the second book of The Origin of F.O.R.C.E. – Dawn of Chrysalis. I really enjoyed the first novel by Sam B. Miller II and was looking forward to this one. Since this book is a continuation it would make more since if you read the first book.
This book brings us to the time when the alien mother ship arrives after sending scoots seventy years previous. The sole survivor “Whatsit”, has helped the humans prepare for an evasion of earth. He continues to enlighten us with his humor in this book also.
The two characters I enjoy most in this book are the mousy, Doctor Heinbaum and the huge Scottish Captain McPherson. One tries to show he is superior because of his intelligence and the other believes the size and physical abilities is the manliest trait. Through their continual debates they discover the secret to the Chrysalis’s ability to light speed is a controlled black hole.

My favorite quote in the book is: “Humans don’t easily accept authority. In fact, the harsher the punishment for disobedience, the more unruly the blasted creatures become!”
