“How did all this happen?” I softly asked Daljeet’s uncle. The environment was filled with sorrow. Everyone was in mourning. People were crying over the demise of Daljeet, this is the only accident that happened in this village where no one was daring enough to see Daljeet’s body.
“He was driving and while crossing the signal at an intersection, a heavy vehicle in high speed crashed into his car. The people nearby reported that his car jumped over three feet when collision occurred. The same statement was addressed by the traffic officer.” Daljeet’s uncle said in an unsteady voice, at the same time wiping drops of tears from both eyes using his hanky. He was trying to control himself, so was I. Tears were streaming down continuously from my eyes and I was trying to clear them with my hands, but they didn’t seem to want to pause. He was not only my classmate but also was one of the best friends I ever had.
His name was Daljeet Singh, basically from Ludhiana but he was living in Delhi with family for his father’s business. He was engaged 15 days back and was to marry on 27th that means day after tomorrow. He was my classmate and best friend too. We completed 12th from Senior Secondary Government High School, Azad Nagar, UP.
All the relatives were preparing for the funeral. I too got involved in the preparations. With a heavy heart, all the formalities of the funeral of Daljeet Singh were completed. Two days later, I was back to home with mom.
