In Book Two, The Widening Road, we see Marty determined to right the wrong she has done and give her children a better life. When Marty discovers the truth behind Stacey’s abuse, she decides to do everything she can to help Stacey heal from her trauma.
Unfortunately, in her exuberance to make up for Stacey’s pain, not only does she put her daughter in another abusive situation that almost destroys her sanity, she ignores her oldest daughter, Katherine, who is following her own road to tragedy, determined to marry for money and have the luxuries she was denied as a child.
Katherine discovers too late that her marriage of convenience is one of heartbreak and sorrow. She must face the reality that she loves the man she thought she only married for his money, but her realization comes with a heavy price.

Book One Summary
Kaja is tortured by a deathbed curse placed upon her by her father when she marries against his wishes. When her husband, Gunner, betrays her with another woman, Kaja is forced to leave her two daughters in Norway and come to America to make a new life. Kaja’s employer, Hans Berglund, is a widower with two children, William and Sophia. Kaja soon finds herself trapped in a loveless marriage when she is raped by Hans and conceives his child. She is never able to return to Norway for her daughters and becomes a bitter and tortured woman.
She puts all her hopes and dreams in Marty, the child conceived the night she is raped. Hans dies when the child is only four years old and Kaja re-marries in hopes of building a new life. William has accepted Kaja as his new mother and loves his sister Marty, but Sophia blames Kaja for the death of her father and never forgives her. Marty is terribly scarred from burns she receives as a child. This gives her an inferiority complex and catapults her into a marriage with Sonny Morley, a man without a conscience.
Kaja recognizes his attributes as those of her husband Gunner in Norway. She warns Marty but her words are ignored. Sonny cheats on Marty and eventually is sent to prison. Kaja dies but not without forcing Marty to promise to never forgive Sonny. Marty ignores her promise and is eventually left alone and penniless with four children, Ronny, Katherine, Stacey and Chris.
Her son Ronny has grown up much like his father, and Marty is devastated when she discovers he has abused his younger sister, Stacey, for many years.
Stacey and her older sister, Katherine, form a strong bond and are determined to make a better life for themselves than the shack they are forced to live in when Sonny leaves.
As an adult, Stacey has entered into therapy and Book One ends following her session with psychiatrist Gregg Phillips as he brings her out of the hypnosis session that has revealed the abuse she suffered under Ronny.

Gregg Phillips clasped his hands together and leaned forward in his chair. Resting his elbows on his thighs, he closed his eyes, dropping his forehead onto his hands. Only the gentle weeping of his patient permeated the quietness of the room.
Trembling from reliving her tortured childhood, Stacey sat huddled in the corner of the sofa, her face streaked with tears.
Sighing, Phillips looked up. He moved from his chair and slid over next to her on the sofa. "Stacey, I'm going to count to three, and you will be fully awake and alert, and you will remember everything we have talked about today.
At the count of three, Stacey blinked and opened her eyes. For a moment her face was a portrait of incredible emptiness, then her lip quivered as she spoke. "I'd forgotten."
"No, Stacey, you didn't forget," Phillips replied. "You only smothered the memories so you could survive the pain. Now we can work together to heal those wounds and end the pain forever."
She stared at her hands, still wrapped tightly around her arms.
He watched her eyes moisten and cloud; a fresh teardrop rolled down her cheek.
He turned and placed his hands on her shoulders.
"Stacey, your brother can't hurt you anymore, and soon the memory of what he did won't hurt you anymore either."
She reached out her arms to him, and he drew her to himself.
She buried her face in his chest, sobs racking her body. "Why didn't my daddy love me enough to stop all the pain?"
"He couldn't, Stacey. I don't think Sonny Morley knew how to love."
As Phillips' arms encircled her, she clung to him weeping to release her pain. He held her in his arms, stroking her hair, listening to her anguish and wondering how much more was hidden beneath her facade of indifference.
