‘I’ve never cheated on you or anybody else in my entire life or even looked at another man whilst I’ve been with you!’ she repeated, the injustice of his accusation far too much for her to stand.
She knelt beside him, her hand on his tense shoulder. With head bowed, he ignored her as she begged him to be reasonable but he was determined to only believe what he chose to believe. The row escalated again, continuing painfully, exhaustingly on for more than an hour.
With a splitting head, tired and with a chill forming around her heart, she said, ‘I’ve had enough of this. We aren’t going to resolve this tonight, if ever. I’m not sure I want to be with someone who acts so unreasonably, but know this, it’s you, not me, that has put an end to us, for whatever reason you may really have. I think there’s more behind you being so unreasonable. You can sleep in the spare room, obviously.’
‘Fine by me,’ he said, angrily marching off, without a goodnight, to the spare room. She no longer recognised that unreasonable, furious, foul-mouthed man who she had been rowing with all evening and half the night. The knowledge that they were probably over saddened her greatly, hardly believing it could come to such a sorry pass over something so trivial. The fact that Christmas was only a week away made the situation seem all the worse.
The tortuous night stretched out before her as she tossed and turned, running through all the angry words they had just spewed, still trying to formulate a way of convincing him of her innocence. So many nightmarish thoughts were running through her head. Unable to tolerate any longer just lying sweating in her bed, at about 5a.m. she decided to creep from her bedroom, across the landing and into the spare room, which used to be Michael’s room. She was aggrieved to discover that Avan was sleeping soundly. The fact that he was sleeping so peacefully, whereas she, in contrast, had been unable to sleep the whole night, further enraged her, but it was a strange, calm anger, a resolved and determined one.
She quietly told him as he stirred, ‘I’m glad you’ve managed to sleep so soundly. I’ve been awake all night because of you and your damned, irrational jealousy and paranoia. Get up right now and leave my house! The way you were with me last night is totally foreign to me. You’re like a stranger to me now. I no longer know you.’
