Dude Not Perfect is a name that represents the average guy. I'm that guy. I have a pretty good sense of humour with average income, average looks, average body type, average athleticism . I even have an average family - (wife - 2 kids - a boy and girl). I don't have a white picket fence, but I live in an average size city. Wow - that's boring.
So, what does an average guy have to write about. Well, I have an above average ability to see patterns.
I love paying attention to patterns of behaviour, success, failure, work, sleep, stress. There's really no end to what you can observe. Once I do the research on a pattern like weight loss for example, I like to distill the most simple strategies to get the best outcome.
Then, the best part. I love to share ideas with people who might benefit from it.
I believe that true happiness comes from gratitude and helping others. The happiness pattern for me is to write DNP books in hopes that others can achieve success in their lives.
Dude Not Perfect - 11 Step Weight Loss Breakthrough!
Why are you motivated to lose weight? Sluggish on the basketball court? Want to look good for the ladies? Do you want to wash laundry on those abs?
Whatever your motivation, it may not be strong enough to fight the urges our bodies have come equipped with from the days when cavemen went days without the taste of well charred woolly mammoth meat!
Listen, we have all gone through cycles of weight loss and weight gain. I know of very few guys that have had the steel trap mind to will themselves lean. The evidence suggests that even if you lose weight in a slow and measured way, you will most likely gain it back - and then some.
Nice to meet you. I am Dude Not Perfect.
I speak to those of you that are like me and my posse. We're not perfect. We like a good laugh and we try to do the best they can for family and friends. But we've got so much on the go that paying attention to diet and exercise is not always at the top of the list. We're squeezing into once loose fitting jeans and we don't like it.
It's time to take a stand (without sucking in those bellies)!
I've researched best practices and combined it with my own experience of what works. The Dude Not Perfect - 11 Step Plan will work for you.
It's not a terribly long book. I wouldn't read a long book on weight loss so I extend you that same courtesy.
The book is broken down into three parts.
One. The basic biology of why we eat so damn much and why dieting doesn't work. And why our eating habits in the 21st century are like giving junkies the key to a meth lab.
Two. What are the 11 best steps that will allow you to successfully shed those pounds and keep them off. The steps are doable with flexibility that allows you to focus on what works best for you.
Three. A Summary of the 11 steps that you can tack to your headboard (or somewhere you'll bump into them) so you can revisit the steps easily.
Let me take you on a journey to a better body and a better life.

The DNP Science of Weight Gain
You would have to be living a hermit's life not to see the trend of the pervasive muffin top. Truth is, we are genetically programmed to pack on the pounds at all costs. Back in the day, and I mean the caveman day, food was not as abundant or as convenient. Staying alive depended upon going long stretches without food. Survival of the fittest meant you had to be opportunistic feeders (hmmm! that 12" long beetle looks delicious). You had to eat well beyond what was comfortable. These are our ancestors that survived and passed on their genes.
So the genetic coding is deeply ingrained. My guess is that modest eating habits (oh! I'll just have one chicken wing thanks) will be genetically coded some time in the future when all our toes combine into a single digit...won't likely happen in our lifetime.
Our brain is made up of two main parts; one area, commonly known as the reptile brain, is associated with our primitive instincts like breathing, appetite, sex drive and reacting to emotion. The other is the evolved brain responsible for logic and language. Now, it's the primitive reptilian (limbic) brain that controls emotions and impulses to do things, often subconsciously. Imagine this. You cruise by the kitchen, like a shark ready to attack. You settle on some defenseless, tasty bag of salt and vinegar chips. You demolish the bag (the big bag, not the Halloween size bag)and only slightly reflect on the binge as you lick the residue from your fingers. That's your reptilian brain in action.
So, here is the rub. You have little control over the decisions you make when you are surrounded by food! This is an important notion. You cannot defeat your appetite by starving it from what it wants. Wait! Don't throw in the towel just yet. Remember, we are men, we are ready and willing to fix anything! That's probably genetically coded too.
The other issue with even slightly starving ourselves is that our body will go into "starvation" mode. Your metabolism slows down (this is not the path to a better life - you need energy for a better life!). Also, your body will reserve your fat for these lean times and start burning muscle tissue instead. This is the same muscle tissue that is needed to burn calories to a better weight. Your classic double edged sword.
So this 11 step plan will not include starving yourself...we know that doesn't work for the long haul anyway.
What about relying on good old fashioned will power. Those folk that survived the depression back in the 1930's didn't seem like they had trouble managing their weight even after food was more plentiful.
What did they know that we don't.
Well, modern times are very different. If you are in the business of selling food, there is a popular strategy to grow your sales by making processed food items cheap, convenient, sweet and/or salty. Even the packaging can promote a Pavlovian response when you see that pint of your favorite ice cream...yummy!
Because we are exposed to this type of food non-stop, we have to do what Einstein suggested: he said, "we cannot solve our problems with the same kind of thinking we used when we created them." In other words, we cannot rely on our logical brain to trump our reptilian brain when our modern world tempts us with the volume and convenience of mouth-watering, processed food.
What scientists know about eating is that the urge to eat something does not just correlate with actual hunger. So, I'm strolling by my favorite coffee shop where I'm on a first name basis with the pastries. It doesn't matter if I've had lunch or not; it matters only that I walked by my favorite coffee shop and I know what awaits inside.
Let's talk about what happens to your body at a molecular level. I eat my pastry and my body releases the hormone, dopamine. Ooooh that feels good. It's the same feel good sensation you get when you make babies. Dopamine, the runner's high. We want it; makes us feel alert, assertive, risk taker...man to be reckoned with. One problem, it wears off quickly and is replaced with another not so sexy hormone called prolactin. It has the opposite effect...depletion, irritability and depression. Nope, don't want that...think I'll have another pastry to go! Now, if you fall into a severe emotional cycle of highs and lows, you're body will disown you. Not only does it contribute to weight gain, it will likely lower your immunity, speed up cell aging and mess up your nervous system.
One more thing. How you ate as a young lad has an indelible pattern for how you eat as an adult. When I was young, me and my friends were expected to eat everything on my plate whether we were hungry or not. Don't you know that there are starving kids in China are parents would say. Also, we had free reign to eat snacks anytime I wanted (usually before bed). If you were lucky, your young metabolism would keep much of the weight off. But as you age and your metabolism slows down, and maybe you're less active (love those computer games), you gain weight. And if you have the habit of inhaling your food without enjoying the ride, you will eat way more. I wonder how many of us stay in the moment of savoring each and every bite.
OK, we know the deck is stacked against us.
Let's get to the 11 step Weight loss Breakthrough and kick some reptilian brain ass!
Step 1 - the six success attributes
If you are going to tackle any significant change in your life, you need the right mind set. Think about a time you challenged yourself to build or create something you were proud of. Was it easy? Did you fall off the rails at times? Did you lack confidence at times along the way?
If you're like me, you achieved cool things when you took a good run at what you had in mind and kept at it when things went sideways.
So, what are these things, you ask?
The 6 success attributes:
1. Ask yourself : what is my motivation to a better body, to a better weight? Do you want more energy, be lighter on your feet, look great in an Armani suit, attract a mate?. This is a very personal question. The answer(s) are your beacon when you need motivation to keep going.
2. Don't let setbacks get you down for long. Weight loss (and keeping the right weight) is tough. You will have binging setbacks and you will beat yourself up. You will think that the breakthrough plan is crap. But, those DNP's who get back to it without beating themselves up too badly will do better.
3. Follow a process. They will commit to the actions recommended for the long haul. It's going to take 3 months or so to ingrain these new habits so that they come to you automatically.
4. Believe. They can see a strong image of themselves in that fine Armani suit or however you see success and they remind themselves every day. Belief is a core value. Think of Jordan Spieth. When he knocks in 5 foot putt after 5 foot putt...the man believes...he sees the golf ball roll in before he hits it.
5. Look to constantly improve. If there is a technique that works better than another, then pay attention to that and focus more time there. Every dude is different. Some guys just throw caution in the wind and go for it; other guys need to analyze stuff first. Nothing wrong with either. It's who you are. Pay attention to what aspects of the breakthrough plan work the best for you and improve on them.
6. Do all things with high quality and share the plan to help others. Have the mindset that you always produce the best quality of yourself and your actions (the anti-lazy axiom). Combine this quality with helping others. It's easier to bring high quality to the table when you help other people with your efforts. Losing weight is usually not just a gift to yourself. Your girlfriend, wife, kids benefit from positive change too. Maybe they need help with their eating habits. You are becoming an expert. Share your knowledge. Note of caution: don't start up this conversation with your girlfriend by suggesting you could help her lose a few unwanted pounds...yikes. Maybe this is a good time for me to plug an upcoming DNP book - 11 Step Relationship Breakthrough!
If you get into the habit of thinking about these ideas every day, and you act on them, you will succeed. If you don't in some fashion, you will fail. This is may be the most important idea I share with you.
Get into the habit of reviewing these 6 attributes as part of your daily wake-up routine. It's great to start your day on the right foot...
...they will make all the difference!
