In 1872, Bryce Ackerman hunts in India for 2 groups of army officers to bring justice to the young women they have harmed.
Bryce Ackerman, merchant banker, returns home from a business trip to Vienna expecting to marry his beloved Aimée. But she is pregnant. This is 1872 and Bryce is a Victorian gentleman who doesn’t believe in sex before marriage. Aimée is distraught. So-called officers & gentlemen, visitors to her home, have been running a competition to see which regiment’s junior officers could rape the most young women.
Her family carefully seek out the other violated girls, offering aid & support. But Bryce, for personal reasons as well as an outraged sense of the disgraceful behaviour attempts to chase down the officers. They have returned to their regiments in India.
Bryce follows them intent on revenge for Aimée, and justice for all, but it is no easy task. The officers will do anything to escape retribution, & Bryce has to survive in the exotic & erotic atmosphere of India. Finding justice for the women is a task which tests his values & his honour.

The shock of India, sensuous beguiling, erotic India never wore off. I would that it had, for it made me understand something of the sexual tensions the man I wanted to kill possibly suffered under. I had no wish to feel sympathetic towards the bastard who had robbed me of my fiancée and left her distraught.
Thwarted love and revenge was not a good package to carry in a country so riotously sensual and shameless, especially the thwarted love. But I trusted that my personal anguish, as well as my self-discipline, would overrule a young man’s natural but improper sexual urges. But anger now, that was an emotion harder to control.

Bittersweet
I didn't know how I would go knowing there were rapes, so I started off tentatively. Then I found the story unfolded in an interesting and sensitive way, and I liked that we didn't get the full impact of the rapes all at once, but that they were told as reflections, or from the victims experiences. I was soon absorbed and wondering how it would unfold! All the time I thought he would go back to his Aimee, and never really suspected what would happen, but I was not disappointed with the ending! I loved the way he worked through his angst and fought to maintain his values and self respect when faced with the power of attraction. The search for justice and being conscious of his own motives and failings was the best thing he could have done to become a whole person. A gifted storyteller and had me interested right to the end! Some bits read like it was a movie, in that the scenes changed very quickly, but it lost nothing. If it was a TV series it could have gone on and on!

I truly wasn't sure what I would think about this book when I read the description but I wanted to read it because I like reading about different cultures and about clashes between them. This book takes places during the British Raj and I find it very interesting to see the portrayal of these two cultures. I think the author did a very good job of showing the many views of how these two groups felt about each other. The subject matter, rape, kidnapping, etc was disturbing but told in a much less graphic way than I had feared it might be done. All in all, I liked the way the characters were developed and I liked that while the story had a definite conclusion, it left open the "lure" of a continuing story between two of the main characters without just hurrying up a fast conclusion just to resolve the relationship.The two characters deserved a more in-depth development of their relationship and I hope Ms. Lindsay will provide it!
