Indian ethos and ethnicity are the essential elements in Indian poetry in English. The early Indian English poets explored the mythical, traditional and cultural characteristics as the themes of their poetry and succeeded in establishing themselves as true poets. The wide recognition of Indian English poetry paved the ground for new poets to come up with varied themes. The poetry written, published and read in the English language has surpassed all poetry written in other languages today. This fact has given rise to a wider scope of Indian English poetry for study and research purposes.
The rise of new poets in India is a good sign of strengthening Indian English Literature on the world arena. Though already Indian English Literature has established its important place in the World Literatures, still it has to continue producing good works in which poetry has its own due role. The present book aims to explore the poetry of established as well as the rising poets whose contribution to Indian English Literature needs due attention by the academic world.
Post-Independence Indian Poetry in English: New Experimentation contains twenty one research papers on different aspects and themes of post-independence Indian poetry in English. The book begins with the description of Nissim Ezekiel’s famous poem ‘Night of the Scorpion’ where the author Dr. RP Chavan illustrates “superstitious beliefs and practices” along with “a touch of gentle irony … evocative of the Indian ethos.” There are two papers on A.K. Ramanujan by Mr. Abhinandan Malas and Mr. Raghvendra Mohan Tripathi. Mr. Malas justifies that “In spite of staying abroad for a long time Ramanujan did not forget his nation. Family plays an important role in describing the nation for him. In his poetry we find nation and family interrelated.” Mr. Tripathi finds “The tension between inner world of the past and the need to be free from its fears and traditions” in Ramanujan's poetry. Dr. Deblina Sarkar deals with the poetry of Jayanta Mahapatra, R. Parthasarathy, Keki N. Daruwalla and Kamala Das and finds the reflections of the Indian consciousness in their poetry.
Ms. S. Somasundari Latha tries to establish the fact that Kamala Das is a rebellious poetess. “Her poetry is born out of inner compulsion and restlessness. Her attempt to explore the unexplored things in the women’s world namely pain, angst, ecstasy and sufferings portrays her as a rebel.” Dr. Amit Bhattacharya begins with elaborating the concept of ‘race’ and finds it creating and complicating difference between man and man. He explores Kamala Das’ poetry which “presents diverse modes of resistance”. He also analyses that in her poetry Kamala Das “adopts the technique of exposure, to hold a mirror up to all that goes on in the name of ‘race’, ‘ideology’ and ‘nationalism’ with the underlying message that man must triumph over all other considerations if he has to usher in a more equitable world order.” Dr. Syed Ahmad Raza Abidi is a young and brilliant scholar. He critically examines the poetry of Shiv K. Kumar and elaborates Kumar’s approaches to social satires. The paper has a good illustration of the poetry of Kamala Das in which she has been shown as one of the precursors of romantic tradition in modern Indian English poetry. Dr. Abidi, in this paper, also explores the social realism in the poetry of Saleem Peeradina, Arvind Krishna Mehrotra, Adil Jussawala and Keki N. Daruwalla.
Dr. Santosh Kumar Padhy explores derridean deconstruction in Niranjan Mohanty’s Prayers to Lord Jagannath. Beginning with Jacques Derrida’s Of Grammatology (1967) and its English translation (1976) by Gayatri Chakraborty Spivak, Dr. Padhy analyses Niranjan Mohanty’s Prayers to Lord Jagannath on the ground of Derridean Deconstruction. He asserts that it is “as much difficult as to ascertain the unresolved mystery of Lord Jagannath, the living and loving God of Odisha.” The deconstruction of the poem is meant to get it accessed by the entire world in order to read and know about the Lord of the universe.
The poetry of Agha Shahid Ali, an illustrious Kashmiri poet, has been well discussed by Dr. Syed Ahmad Raza Abidi. The author discusses different aspects of Ali's poetry along with his translation of ghazals into English. He finds an undercurrent of alienation and nostalgia in Ali’s poetry. There is also a description of the “Loss of the beauty and peace of the beautiful valley of Kashmir, and poet’s grief over this loss has been elaborated through vivid examples.”
Dr. Bhaskar Roy Barman is one of the most celebrated Indian English poets, writers and critics. His paper on the poetry of Syed Ameeruddin begins with a long introduction to the identity of Indian English poetry and well discusses his poetry which has ‘a universal perspective’. Through the analysis of his poetry the author proves that Ameeruddin’s ‘spirit is deeply rooted in India and in its culture.
Mr. Aju Mukhopadhyay is a famous name among Indian English poets and writers. His first paper deals with the poetry of three poets- Ranu Uniyal, Jaydeep Sarangi and Santanu Halder, and the second paper deals with the poetry of five poets namely P. C. K. Prem, N. P. Singh, O. P. Arora, Murali Sivaramakrishnan and Ratan Bhattacharjee. These two papers reflect different curves and convolutions of life in modern time where joy and sorrow keep on playing the game of hide and seek, and the beauty of nature and faith in eternity provide a solace.
An important part of the book is that besides the poetry of above mentioned poets taken by Mr. Aju Mukhopadhyay there are detailed studies on the poetry of some more emerging poets.
Dr. Abidi discusses the poetry of Deepika Srivastava, O.P. Arora, D.C. Chambial, A.N. Dwivedi, K.V. Dominic, Arbind Kumar Chaudhary, Susheel Kumar Sharma in his other two research papers which is significant in modern Indian English literature.
Dr. Manoj Kumar Pathak and Mr. Robert Francis Harle have well illustrated the contrast between man and Nature in the poetry of Aju Mukhopadhyay.
There are three research papers on the poetry of Vijay Kumar Roy by Mr. Aju Mukhopadhyay, Dr. Santosh Kumar Padhy and Dr. Syed Ahmad Raza Abidi. They have sketched the philosophical, aesthetic and humanistic aspects of Roy's poetry along with some other views.
Mr. Aju Mukhopadhyay's paper on Vinita Agrawal explores pathos and compassion in her poetry. The author finds Buddhist inclination in her poetry. "Though Vinita’s poems seem to be pessimistic, actually they aren’t so materially. For it is not the result of any frustration but are based on faith expressed in a very artistic and poetic way."
Dr. Nirmal Sharma discusses social sensibility and human values in the poetry of Sangeeta Mahesh. The paper is an in-depth study of critical human situations where “spirituality, materialism, humanity, pain, poverty, patriotism, feminism” have important roles to play.
Dr. Santosh Kumar Padhy's paper on subaltern study in Nandini Sahu’s Sukamaa and Other Poems is an admirable research. He begins with the origin of the term 'Subaltern' and goes in the depth study of it illustrating the Subaltern issues in the poetry of Nandini Sahu.
Covering a wide range of themes in the poetry written after independence of India, the book is useful for teachers, researchers and general readers interested in Indian English poetry.
