Excerpt
Championship Saturday finally arrives for Brent. It’s the perfect chance for him to redeem himself for losing the regular season game and a chance at a perfect season against Westside. He’s been dreaming of playing in the championship game all season. With a win in the championship game he will be able to play his next game on ESPN.
“Game Day, BABY!” Brent says to himself, with a clenched fist raised high in the air as he bolts downstairs for breakfast.
As Brent glides down the staircase, he sees his older brother on the couch with the clicker firmly in hand. He’s watching highlights from last night’s Red Sox vs. Yankees game on the Major League Baseball network.
“Hey, Brent, dude, watch this replay… it’s totally sick,” says his older brother. “The Yankees batter is so angry at getting hit by the Red Sox pitcher that he chucks his bat at him. It is crazy!”
“I’ve been that angry before,” Brent thinks, remembering, all too well, his fury three weeks ago. It was a game the Eagles won 21 - 5 versus the Mud Cats. Brent had struck out with the bases loaded. His dad, Coach Pablo, yelled so loud at him that crows, watching the action from their perch on an electric power pole, flew away at lightning speed. Brent had wished he could fly away with them.
Anger throws a curveball at Brent, interrupting the joyous beginning to his Championship Saturday. “Should’ve thrown my bat at Dad,” fumes Brent under his breath.
