Excerpt
How many of you have suffered in your life? I’m sure many of you would raise your hands.
That's honesty; it’s reality. D.A. Carson is one of today's outstanding evangelical theologians and a brilliant Bible teacher. He wrote a book which I immediately purchased when I saw his name on it, and when I saw the subject. In the past few years, I’ve read and re-read this book, several times in fact. The title of the book is How Long, O Lord? Reflections on Suffering and Evil.
I got the book, because over these many years of pastoral ministry, I have been by the side of many people who have suffered.

I got some unexpected and bad news about my health. Ultimately it’s going to impact all of you here at Faith Community Church. And I’ll tell you the news in a moment, but first here’s a little bit of back story.
I never experienced any real health problems until recently. I’m in my early sixties about to cross into my mid-sixties this year. But right now, I’m in my early sixties! I just want to make that very, very clear... early sixties. I’m very, very blessed in that regard.
Now some of you might have known that last September, I had a biopsy...

Review by Hilary Hawkes for Readers' Favorite
The Reality of Suffering and the Peace of God is an inspirational and encouraging book about the Christian viewpoint of suffering. Author Pastor Glenn C. Stewart seeks to help others deal with the pain and traumas they face in life by sharing his own ongoing encounter with suffering. His words, based on a sermon he delivered to his congregation at Faith Community Church, draws on Biblical passages and verses from both the Old and New Testaments, teaching that God is ever present and alongside to strengthen and guide.
The book begins with the pastor’s recollection and empathy for the many people he has come to know who have faced traumatic events, losses and difficulties. Readers will identify with the sense of sadness and bewilderment that can be experienced, and be encouraged by the author’s assertion that peace, acceptance and hope can still be found, even in the most difficult of situations. The verses Stewart brings to our attention convey God’s love and assurance in a strong and comforting way. The message of this book is that God heals in many different ways in this life and, or, the next. The author’s own experiences and testament of his diagnosis and treatment for a sub-cortical brain tumor put him alongside others in emotional need, making this book far more than a "teachy" sermon.
Pastor Glenn C. Stewart’s very readable, thoughtful and wise words will help others who are suffering to stand firm in their faith through understanding and remembering their God’s promises: for example, Isaiah 43:2 says “when you pass through the waters, I will be with you”; Joshua 1:5 says “I will not leave you or forsake you”. I particularly liked the chapter on Finding Courage where we are reminded that Moses, Joshua, Gideon, Jeremiah etc all felt too uncertain of themselves to face big challenges – but all found themselves able to do so when they put their trust in God. The recognition of fear as being a very natural and human response is importantly recognized in the book, which has a sensitive, empathetic, as well as confident tone.
A short and carefully crafted book, The Reality of Suffering and the Peace of God can help the reader find strength and courage at the darkest of times, whether dealing with their own or a loved one’s suffering.
Every Believer in Christ Needs to Read this Compelling Book
The Reality of Suffering and the Peace of God is extremely powerful! Glenn takes 40 years of spiritual ministry and the bruising reality of life in this fallen and broken world to skillfully demonstrate how God's Word works these together for His eternal purpose and glory. Every believer in Christ needs to read this compelling book because we all are confronted with the challenge of walking in faith, through our times of doubt, in the midst of suffering.
Faith In Action!
What a tremendous message of faith in action. This book/message was one of the most impactful reads I've had. As we will all deal with suffering at some point of our lives, this book show the promise of hope that we have in the peace of God during those times. How we can rest in the assurance that the Lord will be with us as we "pass through the waters."
Intuitively, I know I've lived many lifetimes, and none more interesting than the one I'm living now. However, being born an old soul somehow did not excuse me from the same job I share with you and that is learning to craft a positive attitude about
