Too many parents wait until it’s too late to find out the answer to this hard question. This is a very complex situation that is being complicated by economic pressures, homelessness, joblessness, and lack of affordability of education. The breakdown of the family unit, lack of supervision, children are starving for structure and guidance. Broken homes, lack of male role models in the home especially for boys, and lack of a female role model for girls is a big part of the problem.
Some parents don’t want to know the truth because it’s too painful to face. Some parents already know the truth, but they’re in denial. Some families are so dysfunctional that the parents don’t even care! Some parents are addicts themselves. Some parents are such horrible enablers that they can’t see the forest through the trees. The ends to addiction are jails, institutions, and death, so it’s important that we educate parents. Parents are not supposed to bury their children.

I’ve answered the phone calls at 3:00 A.M. and listened to the blood-curdling screams of mothers telling me that their sons or daughters had overdosed and died minutes ago. There is nothing to be said, no words that can comfort, it’s too late! I’ve stood in the cemeteries and watched the fathers cry as their sons and daughters were buried. It’s almost unbearable to watch. The time to do something is now!
I also want to mention that Pathological Gambling is three to four times more likely to affect teenagers than older people. Problem Gambling is the number one addiction related to suicide. One in five Pathological Gamblers will attempt suicide.

Dr. Kevin T. Coughlin's book titled; "Addictions: What All Parents Need to Know to Survive the Drug Epidemic," is an essential read for parents, clinicians, and those who run treatment centers. Kevin has written an in-depth "how to" for those dealing with a loved one who has been claimed by drug addiction. My favorite is chapter two where Kevin lays out the terminology of many "street" names and the effects drugs has on an addict. Many times you read addiction books, and you have no "clinical" idea what the book is explaining in terms for a regular person to grasp. Not with this book.
Kevin has done an exceptional job in writing. You will find many helpful resources and information to keep your loved ones safe and what to do if a loved one becomes addicted to drugs. He shares help and give's hope through this book. We know many lives are claimed by the drug epidemic in this country every day. So don't go it alone. Please, read this book, so your child doesn't become the next statistic of drug addiction.

Addiction is a complicated and often times scary topic to confront and discuss. This holds especially true when it comes to our children. This book is the ultimate guide to understanding the causes, signs and consequences of addiction. It starts broad and talks about the growing epidemic in this country and then zeros in on types of addictions and how they manifest. After you’ve recognized addiction, the book labors to explain different forms of treatment and ways to recover. It warns of enabling a loved one and preaches the goodness of tough love. I found this book highly informative and with the rise of opiate addiction at an all-time high in the US, very timely and appropriate.
