Even as a gossip columnist, her facts were always right on the money and her clear, sharp prose won an almost fanatic readership. She had even supercharged her fame and popularity by winning a seat as a panelist on the sophisticated and overly formal television program, What’s My Line?. It was an amazingly popular show for reasons Don never really understood. It was slow moving and pompous with that idiot host, Daly, and if he wasn’t enough, there was always that cardboard cutout, Bennet Cerf, the pompous publisher of Random House. Both always dressed in formal tuxedos for God’s sake, and the female panelists all wore expensive gowns. It was like a prom for aging has-beens. Not only was the show pompous, it was totally predictable. Don thought of it as the show where absolutely nothing ever happened. Whenever Don watched it, always from the front row in the audience section, he wanted to yell out, “He’s a God dammed plumber for Christ sake.” It was unbelievably tedious, but there you go. A big part of being an agent was pretending to like everything your client was involved in. Or as Daly would state it, “Everything in which your client is involved.” On that show, Dorothy easily out-performed her fellow panelists in questioning guests to determine their professions. Each question could only be answered by a “yes” or “no,” and each “no” answer added five dollars to the contestant's winnings, with a fifty-dollar top prize if the profession wasn’t guessed. A whole fifty bucks! Imagine that! The panelists could keep asking questions until a “no” answer was received and then questioning moved to the next panelist. Dorothy was sometimes criticized for asking questions that she knew would be answered with a “yes” to increase her on-camera time, and Daly, the program’s host, was rumored to have once referred to her as “that chinless wonder.” Great stuff, that. Too bad he couldn’t spread that juicy gossip around. However, she proved to have the best track record among all the panelists for guessing a contestant’s profession. The show was extremely popular, and it made Dorothy a household name. Meanwhile, in New York she continued to be one of the best-read columnists. After Dorothy’s statement about blowing the lid off of the JFK investigation, she clammed up and wouldn’t give Don any more insight, but Don was able to read a lot by her expression and overall bearing. She was excited and so full of adrenaline that she could barely sit still. On later reflection, Don thought that her downfall came because she was so full of herself that she thought nothing could happen to her. But investigating the JFK case was like running with the bulls at Pamplona.

Waiting to Run was quite an interesting read for me. I kept thinking I was going to read something wicked scary. Not really my type of read, but I was given a copy for an honest review. The whole controversy with JFK intrigues me, and I actually remember the show What’s My Line? The holograms and quantum leaps were a stretch for me, kind of reminded me of Stephen King’s Talisman, which I didn’t care for much. But Peter and Jeff cracked me up through the whole story. Dude! If anything you definitely want to read this book and check out the chapter titles. Mr. Matlack has such a punster way creating witticism titles to each chapter that I loved. I almost could hear a song with each chapter. The descriptions he wrote of the bullet going through Oswald after Jack Ruby shot him was pretty cool too. And now, because I’m such a hypochondriac I think I’m a witch.

Fascinating Fun Fable
W.H. Matlack takes the reader on multiple journeys in his novel Waiting to Run. Back to the 60s—JFK’s assassination, Lee Harvey Oswald, Jack Ruby, Dorothy Kilgallen of “What’s My Line” fame—to present day speculative quantum physics. Paths lead to witches of celebrity status who join hands with evolving witch Jhona. Comic interchanges between Peter and Jeff offer fun detours from harrowing sequences depicting the eternal battle between good and evil. W.H. weaves fact and conjecture into an imaginative maze creating a fascinating read.

Fasten your seat belts for this one!
What Mr. Matlack has come up with is a very clever reexamination of one of the most famous events in recent history, the Kennedy assassination. This event has also generated scores of alternative theories, many of those conspiratorial, but none as entertaining as the one here.
The book is fast-paced, but never frantic. I truly enjoyed the characters- they are a motley band, who somehow manage to save the world when called upon to do so.
I think what I like most about this book was how much fun the author had with the material. How could I not enjoy myself reading "Waiting to Run" when it is so obvious how much fun the author had writing it? This book is not for stuffy historians, but if you have a sense of humor and adventure, then fasten your seat belts and enjoy the ride.
