"she (Karen) knelt on the floor, feeling like Alice in Wonderland when she grew too big for the room.She cautiously lifted the heavy lid of the old trunk, watching for spiders or worse. A torn faded newspaper clipping fluttered to her feet. She took one item after another from the box and placed them each carefully on the floor. Letters, birth certificates, legal documents. She glanced at dates - 1974, 63, 45, 22, 1890. It was packed with baby blankets, rattles, a yellowed lace wedding veil - packed full of the past.
Amid its contents, Karen spotted hand-written journals. She picked up one thick leather-bound missive and slid her finger gingerly along the pages. The handwriting was precise and straight as if there were printed lines on the page. She began to read:
Millicent Granger died today of typhoid. I sat with her to the end.l will miss her companionship. Today I will help prepare the body for viewing.
Karen flipped to earlier pages and read another excerpt: Charles tells me rail employees cannot participate in the land run because of the unfair advantage of living here. How will we ever be able to build a house with no land? Some days I consider returning to Papa and settling in Abilene.
