Pipa (琵琶/批把), literally meaning "plucking forward and backward", is a four-stringed Chinese musical instrument with a history of over 2 000 years that can date back to the Qin Dynasty. Actually before the Tang Dynasty, the word "pipa" was a general term referring to all kinds of plucked chordophones. Sometimes known as the Chinese lute in the West, pipa belongs to the plucking family in the modern Chinese orchestra .
