The suona can date back to the time of the Achaemenid Empire (550 ~ 330 BC) when it was frequently used in the military. During the Yuan Dynasty, it was introduced to China and known as the laba, soon becoming popular among the folk people in the 16th century. The sonorous and bright sound of the suona can create a lively atmosphere, especially suitable for ritual music, such as weddings and funerals. Besides, it is widely played in the Northern part of China like Shandong and Henan provinces where it plays an important part in their folk music, either solo or ensemble with other musical instruments.
