A guide to play the Chinese zither for advanced learners.

This book will teach you to play the guzheng at the advanced learner's level on the basis of the previous book. Various fingering techniques, different schools of guzhengs and ways to maintain the guzheng will be introduced, whereas a number of sheet music will also be provided for practices. After reading the whole book, you should have a deeper understanding of the guzheng and can play more songs by yourself.

Excerpt

The eight basic techniques of the right hand are simple and straight forward, and even their derivatives are not intricate at all: “double” means “two strings”, “triple” means “three strings” and “consecutive” means “several strings”, exactly being what their names suggest. In this connection, I will mainly explicate techniques of the other three tables in this chapter.

As a reminder, below are the definitions of the eight basic techniques:

“Pi”: Pluck the string inward with the thumb;
“Tuo”: Pluck the string outward with the thumb;
“Mo”: Pluck the string inward with the index finger;
“Tiao”: Pluck the string outward with the index finger;
“Gou”: Pluck the string inward with the middle finger;
“Ti”: Pluck the string outward with the middle finger;
“Da”: Pluck the string inward with the ring finger;
“Zhai”: Pluck the string outward with the ring finger.
