Brian Edward Hurst was the teacher and mentor of famous American medium James Van Praagh. Brian tells of his early years in wartime Britain, his painful adolescent years of discovery, his move to London and involvement with movies, television work and Spiritualism. Friendship with famous mediums led to attendance at outstanding physical phenomena seances where the author's mission in life was revealed.
Journeying to India to be of service, the author traveled widely, had strange psychic experiences and made many friends during his two year residence in Ahmedabad.
After returning to England, Brian documents his work with visiting psychic surgeons from the Philippines. Later a move to California brings the author fame as a survival evidence medium through various television appearances and a write-up in the Los Angeles Times magazine. Many grieving parents were comforted when Brian worked with Doris Tate and Parents of Murdered Children. In 1977 the author facilitated the successful visit of the famous Scole Experimental Group from England, who gave outstanding demonstrations of physical mediumship to over 160 people. The author describes the astonishing phenomena that took place in the darkened garage of his Reseda home, proving the reality of a spiritual dimension. During the latter part of the seance, the guide announced that the red light would be turned on. He said that it was time for us to see the 'ectoplasm' that had made the phenomena possible....there was a strange gurgling noise from the medium's throat and as I stared at his mouth I noticed a broad band of silk-like material slowly emerge from his lips. His mouth was slightly open and his head slumped forward on his chest. At first it looked like a handkerchief emerging as some kind of weave appeared on it, but as it descended lower and lower, creeping over his trousers like a long, flowing ribbon, I saw it touch the carpet and begin to move slowly out into the middle of the room. It looked pink because of the nearby light, but I guess its natural colour would be a greyish-white....The end of the ectoplasm rose in the air and appeared to be moulded into a perfectly formed arm and hand. The hand opened and closed its fingers. I could clearly see the nails shining.The arm rotated and then the materialisation seemed to melt away and the ectoplasm began to move back towards the medium. It slowly moved up his jacket, over the top of the ropes (which bound him) and once again disappeared inside his mouth. He appeared to gulp it down. I was close enough to see everything in detail and I know that I was not hypnotised or hallucinating. I questioned other sitters at the end of the seance. They all reported seeing the same thing.

Autobiographies of mediums tend to consist of accounts of a succession of unverified subjective experiences unsupported by independent evidence. British-born medium Brian Hurst, now living in California, goes to the other extreme and gives us relatively few details of the abilities that seem to have made him something of a media star in the U.S.A., while describing the abilities of others more generously. These include such mediums as William Olson, Jim Hutchings, Leslie Flint, and the members of the Scole group who held a number of eventful sittings in Hurst's home. There are also good accounts of healers David and Helen Elizalde in controversial action at Stanstead, and of the ever-enigmatic Sai Baba.
More than half the book consists of memories of childhood, education and a number of early jobs. I would have liked rather less of these and a good deal more about the author's own experiences in mediumship which, when he does get around to mentioning them, he describes very well.
