Enabling Enlightened Populism
Enlightened Populism is more than a political philosophy; it is a behavioral pattern of communication. It involves listening to multiple experts, trying to understand how they reached certain conclusions and investigating the information to discern the truth.
It contrasts with the two dominant behavioral patterns of communication in today’s world; Blind Elitism, which involves blindly following an expert or an elite on a certain issue without investigating the information, and Ignorant Populism, which also involves the absence of investigation while relying on feelings and/or trends.
Enlightened Populism is the healthy alternative and the required infrastructure for humans around the world to dismantle tribalism, cronyism, polarization, toxic competitiveness, oppression, systemic bigotry…
Simply stated, Enlightenment is a state that emphasizes reason and individualism rather than tradition.
For individuals to be capable of practicing Enlightened Populism, they must have the willingness along with adequate time and energy.
For Enlightened Populism to thrive as a behavioral pattern of communication in today’s world, one must find the right balance between push-based information present on social media and pull-based inquiry through search engines and Large Language Models.
By design, social media caters content based on one’s preferences and history of engagement, which ultimately creates social media bubbles, also known as echo chambers. The healthy alternative is to actively seek information through search engines and Large Language Models.
It is crucial to keep in mind that even search engines and Large Language Models may be biased due to ownership by major corporations, there may be ranking bias toward certain intuitions, and there are AI training limitations and potential hallucination. This is why members of the population should be ready to dig deep and check multiple sources of information to find the truth.
The regular case in many countries in which people need to work long hours just to be able to provide a dignified life for themselves and their families may prevent those people from investigating issues related to their healthcare, education, legal aspects, economic choices, political choices… with a Universal Basic Income in place, people will mainly have to work for self-actualization and not to provide the basic necessities.
The current conversation about Artificial Intelligence replacing human beings at work is heading completely in the wrong direction; a side of the debate is in favor of technological expansion while maintaining the contemporary work conditions just to achieve economic growth, the other side is in favor of limiting technological expansion to protect jobs while highlighting the fact that the mentioned economic growth will only help the ultra-wealthy amass profits.
The call for limiting technological innovation is literally about moving backwards in the course of history, which is illogical and impossible at the same time; it can only be viewed as performative opposition to the billionaire class. The ideal solution is simply taxing billionaires out of existence; setting a wealth cap at $999 million, while using the money to introduce and fund basic human rights such as shelter, access to clean water and food, education, healthcare, stable speedy internet connections… effectively using the technological breakthroughs to shorten the current working hours all over the world, allowing people to have enough time and energy to practice Enlightened Populism. In other words, let us all share the benefits of technology.
Under the current system, such solutions remain impracticable due to the fact that there are tax havens in which billionaires can hide their money, while managing to buy politicians all over the world. The current international organizations are not capable of solving this problem, the only feasible solution is to unite the planet under a single government with equal rights for all citizens of the world.
There is also a weird idea that the current concentration of capital drives innovation; by depriving the current billionaires of their huge influence, they may lack the motivation required for launching new projects that may help them gain more money, and the global economy may lose traction accordingly. The solution is simple, we can publish a yearly global list of top tax contributors based on the profits they generated to replace the current lists of the wealthiest human beings on the planet; if the current 3,508 billionaires (according to Statista) feel demotivated by this change, other human beings will start gaming prestige and status instead of gaming money and influence on a global stage.
A single global government will practically put an end to all wars; unite human beings within a single structure, allowing us to spend trillions on infrastructure, social safety nets, housing, education, healthcare, medical research… instead of weapons and military industrial complexes that will surely vanish. The new government will inherit all of the weapons of the currently existing states, and it shall be capable of defending the planet against any Sci-Fi dangers like alien invasion.
The current Ukrainian-Russian war is mainly about two governments viewing a piece of land as theirs to rule and practice sovereignty over. The current nation states were mostly formed on the basis of power and resources, whether through agreements or wars, so wars like that between Russia and Ukraine can only be considered a logical extension of the very nature of nation states. In a perfect world, the global government will practice sovereignty over all lands on this planet and any other planets we may inhabit in the future.
The Arab-Israeli conflict started in the first half of the 20th century and it has been in and out of global public attention ever since. On one side, the Zionists (Jewish or Christian or whatever their religious beliefs might be) would like to create a grand Jewish state. On the other side, Arabs in the region believe they have the right to defend the land as the original inhibitors of the region. This has caused wars between the Israeli state since its foundation in 1948 and the Palestinian, Egyptian, Syrian, Lebanese… governments. The current nation states were mostly built along certain ethnic or religious groupings, a system that will seize to exist once a global government is established. People around the world need to realize the simple fact that a piece of land does not have a religion or ethnicity.
Many other examples of military conflicts will naturally follow the same logic as those stated above.
The so called “trade wars” will also be a thing of the past, also corporations will not be able to exploit “cheap labor” in certain countries while moving jobs away from other countries and increasing unemployment rates… everyone will have equal rights.

A global government shall also be capable of holding corporate executives accountable (as long as it does not depend on billionaires for its existence), including those who work within the healthcare field, the so called “healthcare mafia” will seize to exist and these executives can be sent to prison if their “products” cause undeclared health issues, helping commoners trust the healthcare system. Disabling Indoctrination
Indoctrination runs within the very system of the socialization process, starting with parents and immediate family members, followed by media, religion, school, peer pressure, university (if applicable), workplace…
Nationalism, patriotism or whatever you may call it (authors like George Orwell attempted to draw distinctions between both terms) is absurd, yet it is heavily promoted as a virtue across nations. A sense of belonging to the entire human race is definitely superior to a sense of belonging to a certain tribe, whether it is based on race, religion, birthplace… more on the absurdity of nationalism can be found in my book Ideas that Survived AIDOP.
Without concrete statistics, one may simply notice that most people follow the same religious beliefs as their parents. It is surely a fault within contemporary societies if religious beliefs or lack thereof are being inherited instead of chosen.
We may use Enlightened Populism to diagnose polarization and toxic competitiveness and use it again as the remedy:
On polarization
For political polarization to thrive as a divide and conquer strategy, it cannot be based on complicated political ideologies that a few number of people may understand; it gains its power from cultural elements that most people may understand and/or maintain feelings toward.
“Their problems are not mine”
The segmentation process is typically analyzed from a horizontal perspective, stating that human beings are divided based on race, religion, gender, social class, cultural background… when it might be more helpful to view the criteria for these segments as filters set consciously or subconsciously as nets in a vertical manner, with various degrees of importance.
For certain people, a common religion brings them closer together than a common gender or race, for others, the priorities might be set in a different manner. Another problem with the typical approach toward analysis of divisions is that Nationality is often overlooked as one of the means for segmentation and that is mainly due to the normalization and dominance of the notion of Nation Statehood.
When people in a certain country respond to the refugee crisis by saying “let us help our own first”, and then reject calls for helping the underprivileged who live in the same country, they are often described as hypocrites by those who are interested in helping both; the refugees and the less fortunate within their own country.
As a matter of fact, this sense of prioritization helps highlight the need to understand how these filters work. In this case, there is an upper net of nationalism enforced by the dominance of the Nation State as a sociopolitical construct, followed by social class as a lower net enforced by cultural norms and perceptions of underprivileged communities.
When politicians try to make use of these filters, they mostly would not seek to address the roots of the immigration crisis or the long-term benefits of strong social safety nets for everyone living in a country, it is much easier to rely on feelings.
Fear is a powerful feeling, a convenient way for a politician to rise in a polarized world is to manipulate people’s fears from foreigners and let xenophobia strengthen the first filter. The same politician may also use fear to empower classism, by presenting social safety nets as opportunities for some lazy people to gain benefits at the expense of the rest of the population.
Filters may logically be set in a different order by different individuals, each filter excludes some people, with the last filter representing the ultimate state of selfishness; “their problems are not mine”.
In each society, all agents of socialization play a role in enforcing one or more of the mentioned filters. Religious institutions provide a certain interpretation of a religion, with a certain philosophical approach on the meaning of life and the core objectives that shall be achieved by those who believe in this religion.
In many cases, these institutions play a powerful role in formulating the identities of individuals, which may lead to the religious filter being placed above all the rest.
Christian Zionism in the United States may serve as a good example, for many Christian Zionists achieving the goals of Zionism which are typically aligned with the goals of Zionists in the state of Israel might be set as the first filter. This explains why they would mostly encourage any decisions made by the US government to provide the Israeli government with weapons, financial aid, diplomatic support… In such case, their own perception of religion is placed above nationalism or patriotism, race, cultural background and other influential filters.
