Grave Expectations is book 2 in the Mother-and-Me paranormal cozy mystery series.
When Marabella Vinegar's favorite neighbor, Sam, is found dead, everyone -- including the NYPD -- thinks it was natural. After all, Sam was pushing 80 and had a heart condition. But his heart condition was mild and under control with medication. Marabella and her sidekick -- her recently deceased mother -- don't think there was anything natural about it.
Marabella was already acquainted with Sam's greedy relatives.
Rose, another elderly neighbor, tells Marabella that she had a glimpse of someone fleeing Sam's apartment. Next day, Marabella finds Rose, severely injured, on the floor of the basement laundry room. Rose later dies -- of her injuries? -- in the hospital
Marabella and her mother vow to find the killer. Can she convince her nemesis, Lieutenant Rivera, of the NYPD, that there's a killer stalking the elderly residents of her apartment building?
Excerpt
I wheeled my cart along the corridor in the basement, which was even dimmer than the hall on my floor, thanks to our negligent super, and headed for the laundry room.
Good, I thought, I won't have to wait for a machine. There's nobody here.
But I was wrong.
I heard moans coming from the floor in the corner. Rose Adelman lay half-buried in a pile of laundry. I dropped my cart and rushed over to her. "Rose, my God! " I bent down to her. "What happened? How did you fall?"
She looked horrible. Her face and arms were purple with bruises, and one of her legs was at a strange angle. Her breath was coming in gasps.
"I don't want to leave you, but I have to go upstairs to call EMS." This was downright scary. I glanced around for her cane. It was under her laundry cart, broken in two. That was strange. Her cane was rock solid and had served Rose well for years. Not only that, but she was always careful about walking, including wearing non-slip shoes.
As I turned to go upstairs, she reached up and touched my leg.
"What? Tell me, Rose."
"Didn't -- fall -- pushed," she whispered.
