Excerpt
Cain pounded the earth. “Ugh, son of a bitch. Savannah could be tied to a freaking stake right about now and all this Suuruus or whoever the hell trapped us wants to do is test our patience?” He stood and cupped his hands over his mouth. “Our friend could be dying, you know.”
Taj drew a breath and erupted, only to return to her physical form two seconds later. “No sense in fire-traveling. Whoever put us in this pit implied we’d have to prove ourselves.”
“Well, as you now know, I’ve lived my entire Spirit of Gaia forsaken life proving myself, so what the hell else is new? I wish there was a way to contact the others and get the Northern Knights back.”
“What? Are you getting tired of me, already?”
Cain wrapped his arm around Taj. “Nah, I’ve thought about you for too long to ever get tired of you. I’ve cherished every second of this, even given the circumstances.”
Taj pulled herself away. “No one kisses up more than you.”
“Nah, I think we can agree that’s Vince Lloyd.”
Taj glowered. “Missing in action since December.”
“Proves the son of a bitch’s with Southpoint. Knowing Lloyd, he’ll side with the better odds. Now let’s get the hell out of here—what are you doing?”
“Mother of Gaia, I knew it.”
“Knew what?” Cain strode over, where Taj pressed her hand against the earth.
“Look, we have an earth sign.”
Cain took his Sword and touched the rune with the blade. It withered away, revealing a path flanked by underground evergreens. “Is this an underground forest, or something?”
Taj peered down the endless path.
“Looks shady, but what’re we to do? If we want to talk with Suuruus, we don’t have a choice.”
They stepped inside and the wall containing the rune repaired itself.
Cain stepped to one edge of the path. “If I see a bunch of skeletons I’m going to freak.”
Taj continued gazing in the distance. “There has to be a way out. If Suuruus was once the leader of the Columbian Council, he’s obviously a good guy. Perhaps he’s paranoid Southpoint or bounty hunters are going to discover his lair, or whatever.”
“Well, Jefferson told both of us what to do. You’d think he’d tip-off Suuruus that we’d be on the move.”
“Either way, Suuruus has been isolated for some time. He may not trust anyone at this moment.”
“From what I read during the fall semester, he hasn’t been seen since the Winters Bombings.”
“Twenty-one years without human contact is a long time. He probably forgets what it’s like to have living friends. They’d all be dead—holy, Gaia!”
“What?”
Three pairs of orange lights blocked their path, their snarls drawing nearer.
Taj drew her Sword and edged next to Cain. “Oh, Mother of Gaia, saber-toothed bearcats.”
