Gleaning from her years of clinical work, Dr. Chesney provides proven, user-friendly strategies for tick identification, tick control, tick bite prevention, and tick bite management and treatment. These practical tools can empower each of us to stop the spread of Lyme and tick-borne disease one person at a time.

Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne illness in the United States. There are over 300,000 new cases of Lyme disease diagnosed each year. While researchers and physicians work tirelessly at developing better testing and treatments, the numbers of new cases continue to rise. In order to change the tide, radical education on the prevention of Lyme disease is critical. Dr. Alexis Chesney, a Lyme and tick-borne disease (TBD) specialist, has created a concise guide with practical preventative strategies that everyone - from the weekend outdoor enthusiast to the daily farmer - can use. There are many steps that can be taken to prevent Lyme and TBD - from managing the tick population in your yard and preventing ticks from getting on your person, to treating tick bites promptly and properly if and when they happen. Gleaned from her years of clinical work, Dr. Chesney provides proven, user-friendly strategies for tick identification, tick control, tick bite prevention, and tick bite management and treatment. These practical tools can empower each of us to stop the spread of Lyme and TBD one person at a time.

Tick Control

The first strategy to prevent Lyme and TBD is tick control. There are many excellent resources and products available that address keeping ticks away from your land, inside your home and from your body. With tick habitat in mind, altering the landscape and introducing chemical interventions are two approaches to tick control.

Becoming aware of tick habitat is the first step. “Ticks are more abundant in fragmented patches of moist deciduous forests with shrub understories and are less abundant in large continuous forests and coniferous forests.”[1] Ticks live where yards border wooded areas, gardens, woodpiles, stonewalls and sheds. They have an affinity for leaf litter, moist areas and the shade. To make your land less tick friendly:
• Rake leaves
• Keep grass short
• Trim shrubs and low branches
• Pay attention to border areas:
⁃ Between grass and a building structure
⁃ Between grass and wooded areas
⁃ Around stone walls
• Create wide, grass-free paths made of wood chips or stone

Bird migration is a major cause of the spread of ticks, and therefore is a major cause of the spread of tick-borne disease throughout the United States and Canada. Birds carry ticks that may drop off into your yard, your garden or into the woods. Removing or moving bird feeders to the perimeter is an appropriate preventative measure.

Tick Tubes

The next step in tick control is addressing the animals that act as hosts to ticks. “White footed mice are consistently shown to be the most efficient wildlife reservoirs of B. burgdorferi, infecting between 75% and 95% of larval blacklegged ticks that feed on them.”[2]

Professional Reviews

This is the BEST book ever
I am a forester, and living in one of the most densely population of ticks. I am CONSTANTLY asked what to do to prevent yourself from getting ticks. This is the BEST book ever. It is comprehensive and middle of the road approach. To bad, it isn't available for those who don't use technology. But if you don't have the iphone, or ipad or andriod, go to the library!!!!!!!!!!!

All you ever need to know about tick bite prevention!
Very easy read. I completely agree with previous reviews. Although the purpose of this book is Lyme prevention, there is info to get you started treating Lyme while waiting to connect with a Lyme literate health care provider. A “must read”for all living in or visiting the Northeast!

Comprehensive and simple naturopathic advice.
Dr. Chesney has done us all a great service with this accessible and informative book! It's one of the few out there that is comprehensive in it's scope without being overwhelming. It also has a refreshingly naturopathic perspective that includes the effective use of herbs—for both before and after a tick bite as well as for an active infection. It dispenses with the Lyme myths that have ingrained themselves in some doctors and focuses on research and clinical pearls that support your immune system as well as inhibit infection growth. Dr. Chesney also has great chapters on effective prevention (tick tubes!) and co-infections, among other things.
