We all heard a sudden scream, like nothing
we had heard in days. Buster’s ears
perked up and he began running towards
Carl and Annie’s house. As he
reached the end of our lawn, the chain
stopped him. He growled and barked,
alerting us all to impending doom. This was
no earthquake.
I instinctively grabbed my 22 and started
towards the back end of my car. I ducked
down behind it for protection. I peered
around the corner towards the scream and
voices. Was my shotgun still loaded? I
thought so, but I couldn’t turn back
now.
Two men around their 20’s were
shoving Carl back against the wall of their
olive-green house. This was surprising
because Carl was a tall strong guy. The
taller young man had a gun, similar to the
9mm my daughter owned and had it
pointed at Annie’s head.
“Pay up” the bigger one
yelled.
“I can’t help what my son
owed you last year for drugs… he is
clean now and living in Arizona…
Please let Carl go, he's been sick, let him
go!” She pleaded.
I had heard enough of the conversation.
Carl and Annie were not only good
neighbors but friends. I was about to run
over there on my own when I felt Jimmy
tug me back by my sweatshirt.
He surprised me when he said,
“We go together, quietly.” He
was looking in the direction of
Grant’s house, but I didn’t
think Grant was out yet. He was a soldier.
Maybe he hadn’t heard.
Jimmy and I quietly but swiftly took long
but silent steps up about 8 feet behind the
boys. Carl glanced at us without giving us
away. Annie, terrified and crying DID look
directly at us, her eyes pleading for help.

As an apocalyptic book this one's different. I think that this would be how most of America would react. Other books usually have a hero who is a survivalist who saves everyone. I know if this did happen it would be like this book. Just average Joe's banding together to survive. I really enjoyed it.
