Excerpt

Tarquil is in the cell with Amandeep. She’s clean and dressed properly, complete with headscarf in place. ‘Are you ok?’ he asks genuinely. She nods.
‘Sorry about yesterday, some of my colleagues are not quite as civilised as they should be.’
She says nothing.
‘We’ve got your phone codes and we’ve got your other three friends. A nice job lot for us to deal with. Sorry to be blunt, but we haven’t got much time. Tell me why you became a streetplayer.’
‘I’m not a streetplayer.’
‘Then why were you with them? Are you their groupie? Did you make the tea?’
‘No, I cleaned up for them and cooked.’
‘Very funny. Come on, tell me. I saved you from some unpleasantness last night, the least you could do is give me a bit of information.’ She ponders for a moment and then elects to reply. ‘I was their tech. I looked after the equipment and manned the mixer.’ Tarquil frowns. ‘Where did you learn to do that?’
‘You think a girl can’t do tech?’ She starts to show anger. Tarquil tries to calm her down. ‘You are beautiful. You could easily get a husband and have children.’ ‘Yeah, well that was my plan a while back.’ ‘Tell me your plan. Please, I honestly want to know.’
She takes a deep breath. ‘I was at university studying electronic engineering and my plan was to get work and then get a husband.’ ‘What stopped you?’ She regards him with an expression close to disgust. ‘Are you kidding me? I was thrown out of university when you lot stopped girls doing engineering and construction courses. ‘Men’s Work’ as it was called. They didn’t want us mixing with boys, as if we were going to spend our time doing naughty things. We were there to learn! There were thirty of us on that course, all looking to get qualified and work. The university was forced to offer us all-girl office and finance courses. We all left. They’re still making us pay fees for the time we did. I have to work in a shop to repay them.’
Tarquil looks a little uncomfortable. ‘A democratic election voted for this.’
‘Well they got what they voted for. A load of pissed-off girls. And don’t give me that line, none of this was mentioned in the election manifesto. Fucking con-merchants, anything to get power.’
‘It doesn’t mean you have to go and break the law.’ ‘I saw a chance to make my protest and took it. You can do what you like with me, my life was already wrecked.’ ‘Don’t be so dramatic.’ She stands up and pulls off her headscarf, throwing it across the room at him. It lands at his feet in a graceful arc, spreading like a silk flower on the floor. ‘I’ll show you dramatic,’ she snarls in bitterness, ‘You’ve taken everything from me and want me to be a good little girl? Not going to happen.’
‘If you persist in this behaviour, it will end badly for you.’
