In 1840, 21 year old Lani Jorgenson, the daughter of a minister, is transformed into a vampire. For the next 159 years she kills a human or an animal every day to survive.
In 1965 she meets and falls in love with David Forrester, but she can not make him like her. After he comes out of the hypnosis she induced, David vows to hunt her down and kill her, if it takes the rest of his life.
This is not your run of the mill vampire story because Lani cannot be killed with a stake to the heart, and over time, she has developed an immunity to sunlight and can hunt both day and night.
The story deals with not only her life as the only vampire on earth, but the constant struggle of wanting to be human again, knowing that will never be possible.

As she waited for the sun to rise, Lani thought about her parents and what she would do after seeing them again. Can I even see them again after what I have become? It was a riddle more perplexing by the moment. If she told her father she was a vampire, what would he say to her: she was quite certain her mother would faint dead away, in total shock and disbelief, but what her father would do would be quite a different story, indeed. He would surely think her to be a demon, sent to him by the devil himself, and then she would have to kill him, for he would have her pursued to the ends of the earth, if necessary, to end her evil life. She became aware of a single beam of sunlight dancing upon the concrete floor, less than two feet from where she was sitting. Lani reached out to grab it, as she used to try many times in her childhood. When her hand broke through the beam of light, she pulled back because it hurt her, nearly burning her flesh, forgetting that part of Marcus’s story for that brief moment, learning for herself the danger of direct sunlight.
Lani scanned the room, searching for a place the sunlight would not find, yet, with the exception of crawling inside a crate, there was nowhere to hide from her newest enemy. She remembered seeing the black cloth hanging by the window and with only moments to work, she raced up the makeshift crate ladder and pulled the cloth across the broken window, shutting out much of the light. A beam had passed over her arm with little discomfort; this new knowledge suggesting that any part of her body that was covered or shaded from direct sunlight would not be affected, but she needed time to prove her theory, choosing to wait until nearer to sunset to experiment again.
She walked about the room, stopping at the mattress, staring at the last place she was human, mentally reliving all that Marcus did to her and told her about his existence. The new immortal thought that now would be a good time to study his journals. She needed to piece together what he was all about, hoping the information would help with her survival. Lani gathered up the leather bound writings, sat down on the floor with her back to the wall and picked up the oldest journal, written completely in Latin. With her limited knowledge of that language she only hoped that she could understand enough of the words to muddle though. To her delight and amazement, she understood every word now possessing all of Marcus’s knowledge: A gift of the greatest magnitude

This sounds like an excellent and quite interesting book. Where can I buy it?
