"Dear Margaret" is not a novel but simply the letters between two friends. Margaret is in at home doing the regular things a teen age girl did during the 1940's. Harry enlists in the military to defend his country and goes everywhere Uncle Sam sends him. His letters contain vivid detail of war time life- sometimes busy, other times filled with little details of everyday soldier life. He shares first hand accounts of battles including the attack on Pearl Harbor. Through reading the letters the reader gets to know the two young people, to a degree. I wish there was a narrator to fill in details. Overall, good book, especially for those WWII fans.

These are fictional letters between a young American woman and a young man who was present when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Harry, who is based on a real person, works as a radio operator with a flying crew.
The letters are very convincing. They have a very natural tone and are actually enhanced by some awkward expression and a few grammatical mistakes. These are not Pamela Ackerson's but rather Margaret's and Harry's. They make the characters more real.
This text gives us a lot of insight into the history of that time and what it was like for those left at home and for young men fighting for their country.
Even more convincingly, the letters just tail off and we don't really get a conclusion. I was utterly convinced that these were real. At the same time, Margaret and Harry become convincing characters we can relate to.
A great read for anyone interested in this era.
