“That will do, Mary,” she said briskly. “I shall see to Mr-?” She tilted her head to look at the stranger, then gasped as he smiled down at her. For he was not a stranger after all. Once, she had known him well.
“Hello, Manda,” he said.
“Harry?” She gaped at him, her eyes wide with astonishment. “My, you have changed!”
“So have you,” he said. “All grown up, and more beautiful than ever.”
Amanda smiled. “But Harry, what have you been doing? You look so different.”
“Clean, you mean? With neither ink nor tar on my hands?”
Amanda realised the maid was lingering, gazing at Harry from her long-lashed grey eyes. “Mary, I said that would do,” she said sharply. “Go back to whatever you should be doing.” She turned to her unexpected guest. “Come into the parlour, Harry, and tell me all your news.”
