The basis for this play is the conflict between the astronomers Tycho Brahe andJohannes Kepler for the secrets of the solar system (the world as it was then considered).
The planetary observations of the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe (1546-1601)provide the data upon which Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) will later base his famous three laws accurately describing the revolutions of the planets around the sun. The play's conflict stems not only from Kepler's urgent need for Tycho's observations to prove his theories, and Tycho's equally urgent desire not to share them before he can use them, with Kepler's help, to prove his own, but also from the utterly different characters of the two men. Kepler is an advocate of the Copernican sun-centered system, Tycho of the Ptolemaic earth-centered system. Kepler's cunning and seeming weakness are putted against Tycho's arroganced and seeming strength. At stake is the glory and fame for one of the greatest discoveries of all time: how the solar system works. This conflict will keep you on the edge of your seast from first page to last.

Scene One
At Rise: The play opens on a deserted stage. Presently we hear a thudding noise off-stage left. The door on the right bursts open and JEPP, the dwarf servant, runs into the room and dives beneath the table. He pulls the tablecloth close to hide him from his master.
TYCHO. (Roaring, off-stage) ...you bloody little bastard! (HE enteres stage right) By God, I'll have you drawn and quartered! Where is the little beast? (Spotting the quivering tablecloth) Out, out, I say! (Thudding noise goes on again. TYCHO tips the table over, sending pots and pans and notebooks and papers and beer stein crashing to the floor, to reveal the trembling JEPP)
JEPP. Sir, sir...I beg of you...sir. It was not my fault.
TYCHO. (Raising his hand as if to strike...) You dog! You cur! You miserable littl monster, sired by the Devil... (HE suddenly becomes aware of the thudding) Now who in the holy name of Jesus can that be? Herr Kepler? He's not to arrive until tomorrow.
