At Rise: Late afternoon. Both sides of stage lit. Bright sunshine through window stage right, view of trees and distant house. Shadows and sunlight through windows stage left, view bleaker. MAN and WOMAN stand on either side of imaginary wall facing each other, talking on phone.
MAN. It's sheer hell not seeing you as much as I'd like.
WOMAN. I know.
MAN. I love you.
WOMAN. I love you, too. (SHE gasps as car door slams off-stage)
MAN. What's the matter?
WOMAN. Harry's home!
MAN. So early?
WOMAN. Yes.
MAN. Goodbye.
WOMAN. I love you, I love you. (Hangs up but stays at phone, immobile, as stage right darkens)
