For those of us that crave solitude and getting back to basics, Corine Quarterman has written a book that armchair travelers as well as adventurers can enjoy. Although adventure travel has become increasingly popular in the last decade, Quarterman's first trip to Peru in 1988 was during the initial stages. With an abundance of curiosity, an adventurous spirit and a desire to be off the beaten track, she made subsequent trips to a variety of places, including Greenland, Iceland, additional South American countries, Australia and New Zealand.
Dealing with an unexpected lack of accomodations, disrupted schedules and language barriers, Quarterman's determination and sense of humor shine through. She describes in detail the history, cultures and natural beauty of the countries she visited. Helpful maps are also provided, highlighting points of interest.
Perhaps most important, Quarterman's obvious interest in the people she meets, both natives and fellow travelers, is described in her conversations with them and the friendships she formed. As a blue highways traveler myself, 'Odyssey' presented me with a glimpse of the possibilities available for exploration and spiritual renewal, on other roads much less traveled.
