Jay flopped into the middle seat on Air Canada flight 836 from San Francisco to Winnipeg. He leaned back and closed his eyes in an effort to relax. He tried to visualize his girlfriend’s ready smile that would light up a room when she walked in and the way her eyes used to twinkle with humor at the slightest provocation. However, his mind insisted on going back to the phone call he had received earlier in the day. The words of his girlfriend’s mother kept echoing in his mind:
“Her dad brought in the best specialists he could get. They say they need to do more tests. She won’t tell the psychiatrists anything. She says you’re the only one she’ll talk to.”
“Excuse us, please,” a voice said.
