The thirty-passenger McGregor shuttle S-1, breaks through the thick cloud layer surrounding the Planet Kaùsan and into the black, star-filled sky. Through the forward viewscreen, I see the space platform with a Federation battle cruiser and several smaller ships parked nearby. The station has visitors. It must be the reason Admiral Graham called us to attend a special early morning meeting.
Marc and I have both abandoned our native garb and changed into blue, standard McGregor jumpsuits. In the past year, our bodies have become acclimated to the planet’s stifling forty-plus degrees Celsius average temperature, so the platform’s Federation standard twenty-two degrees will feel extremely cold.
As we reach orbit, I struggle to wrap my headscarf about my head and shoulders in the reduced gravity. “Marc, it’s been so long since I’ve worn my shayla, it feels strange just to put it on.”
I see my husband stifle a grin at my distress. “Zyrah, you’d better wait till we reach the platform. I’ve told you, traditional Arabic clothing was never made for weightlessness.”
I pout. “Okay, I’ll wait. But please don’t open the hatch until I’m presentable.”
He laughs. “You always look presentable to me.”
The platform sits in geostationary orbit thirty-thousand kilometers above the planet. Elevators climb multiple slender nanotube-fiber tethers from the planet’s surface bringing molybdenum ore for export and returning trade goods needed by the settlement. Standard shipping container pods filled with exports float nearby, awaiting shipment on the next arrival of the McGregor-7, Marc’s father’s intergalactic freighter.
Marc aligns the shuttle with the station’s rotating crew ring, hear the clang of the platform’s gantry mate onto the shuttle airlock, and feel the pull of the station ring’s centrifugally induced gravity.
Admiral Graham greets us as we exit the airlock. “Marc, Zyrah, glad you could make it so early. If you will join me in the main conference room, the others will arrive shortly.”

Loved It!
I just finished Book 6, and, as usual, I loved it. Larry's characters come to life in the pages, and the story is always enjoyable. I can't wait for Book 7!
