I’m in the small musalla on board my father’s yacht, Second Wind. I’ve just finished the ritual washing in preparation for evening prayers when I hear the door behind me close. I turn to see my aunt’s husband. His lips turn up in a sickening smile.
“Uncle Ziad, what are you doing here?”
“I’m looking for your father.”
“He’s not here.” I pull my abaya up to cover my exposed neck and shoulders. My headscarf, across the room, is beyond my reach.
He approaches. I retreat until I feel my back touch the bulkhead. I lower my gaze and tighten the cloak about me. This isn’t happening.
I feel his thumb drag lightly down my cheek to join his fingers at my chin. He lifts my face to meet his eyes.
“Zyrah, you have become a beautiful young woman.”
I stammer. “I—I’m to be married. My father has chosen a suitable husband for me.”
“I know.” His grip tightens on my chin. “He’s going to be a very lucky man with a wife such as you.” His eyes bore into mine.
I pull my head back against the wall and close my eyes. I feel his warm breath on my face as he moves closer.
I hear a click, and my uncle quickly backs away.
My grandfather stands in the doorway. His eyes travel from Uncle Ziad to me and back.
Ziad calmly turns toward the door. “Well, if you see Ahmad, please tell him he can find me in the salon.”
I exhale a sigh of relief as he exits.
“Are you all right?” My grandfather looks concerned.
“I am now. Thank you.”
He points to the door. “You will tell me if there is a problem.”
I swallow. “Yes, Grandfather.”
