CHAPTER ONE
Hyacinth, that’s what they called her. She was a
fragile child with skin the color of Café au lait.
Her soft auburn curls framed not only her face
but her twinkling brown eyes which were shaped
like almonds, and her beautiful smile which
seemed to welcome all life held in store.
Life greeted Hyacinth like a dawning does the
sun. She was a small enchantress that
immediately drew all kinds of people to her
instantly like a magnet, and she relished all the
attention, but more so the people
She enjoyed her ability to make people smile and
forget anything unpleasant that may be going on
in their individual worlds, and she truly enjoyed
the beam that radiated from her mother’s eyes
on all such occasions. She was her mother’s
child.
Hyacinth was a child of sunshine, who lived to
warm and light the world as she discovered it
with her arms opened wide.
She was also a very daring four-year old, whose
feats included sliding down the concrete steps
that led to Webster Avenue on cardboard that she
folded, scaling up and over high fences, and
climbing to the very top of the monkey bars and
refusing to come down at the neighborhood park
in the Bronx, New York.
