Justin looked down at his shoes. "I - I don't know, I guess I'm just not that
interested in history. Nothing against you, but it just seems boring. I
mean, all that stuff happened so long ago, why do we even care? The past
is the past, and there's nothing we can do about, right? Studying it isn't
going to change anything."
"Justin, I'm not sure that I could do or say anything to convince you
that the study of history is important or relevant to you personally.
Humankind has progressed to where it now is by a series of steps, some
large steps, and a great many small ones. Some of these steps have been
great leaps forward, while others have taken us in directions which have
caused great suffering and hardship. Far more have been tiny steps, like
those of a young child who, by a process of trial and error, seeks to expand
and explore his universe, and thereby find his way, and his place in that
universe. Perhaps you should look at this class as one those tiny steps in
your search toward your own, personal history. It shall be up to you to
determine whether you shall take a great leap forward, or cause yourself
great suffering and hardship. And in the meantime, perhaps you will come
to appreciate the study of history as something personally relevant and
rewarding, as have I.
In any case, I hope you will find it in yourself to take this small
step, not for the sake of this class, but as one step along the way in what I
hope will be a long and successful life."
