It is there that he discovers it was wrong for him to tell lies and with the help of his imaginary friend, tries to escape the wrath of Mighty King Diplodocus, the "meanest, ugliest, dinosaur in all the land". I try to utilize elements of fantasy and a descriptive youth-oriented language which aid in teaching a child the importance of telling the truth. Before long the pie is gone and he is faced with a dilemma. What to tell Mama. Compounding his predicament: Mama makes a second pie, and he gobbles it down as well. Writer Thompson has woven a delightful tale making a case for truthfulness and honesty around a typical home situation. Illustrated by artist Jones' 'sure to please children' illustrations, No More Gooseberry Pie is certain to enchant the younger set. The little peasant boy is guided toward the best conduct in a manner children will accept. The book will serve as a 'talking starter' for parents and children, and teachers and children, as children watch the little boy in the book learn a valuable lesson. As a teacher I would like to see the target audience noted to make it easier for teachers and home schoolers to decide by looking at the first page that this book is or is not one to fit their program. The vocabulary used is a little advanced for the very youngest readers. A word list in the back of the book would be an asset. No More Gooseberry Pie is a read to for the 3-6 group, and a beginning reader for the 6-8's. Children may need to have some words explained prior to their independent reading; 'peasant' comes to mind. Children love 'different' words and I do not find the vocabulary to be prohibitive. From the moment we opened NO MORE GOOSEBERRY PIE, my four-year-old grandson was enchanted by the story! He liked it so well that we read it five times and he still wanted to do it again! For anything to hold a child's interest that long, it has to be good! The story is simple. A young boy eats the gooseberry pies his mother has put out to cool. He lies to her about what happened to them, making up preposterous excuses. Then when he goes too bed, stuffed too full of gooseberry pie, he has a terrible dream about everything he did that day. The story was sweet but not to the point of causing tooth decay. The illustrations were gorgeous! Kym Jones is fantastic! While I know the mother had to see through the explanations of what happened to the pies, my grandson thought they were believable. It was like reading a brand new fairy tale! Author Dorothy Thompson tells this story like she's sitting in the room with you. NO MORE GOOSEBERRY PIE is warm and honest. My kids and I so enjoyed this tale of a little boy who just couldn't resist his mom's gooseberry pie. Having taken a Children's Lit course in college and then having two children, I've read hundreds...possibly thousands of children's books and I hve to say of them all this will be one of our favorites! I have to applaud Ms. Thompson on her wonderful imagination and talent. I loved the repeated phrases in the book. It helps children remember words as they eagerly wait for the chance to recite the phrases with the reader thus making the book both interactive and educational. It also encourages them to read and it's SO much fun! I'd like to thank Dorothy Thompson for an absolutely delightful story that we so enjoyed and will read again!
