Shortly after the noon hour he arrived with a box and a bag emitting a delightful aroma. He took it to the kitchen. “Hungry?”
“Yes, as a matter of fact I am.” Her gait was light, springy as she pranced across the cracked tiled floor to retrieve plates from the cupboard. Before she could get her hand on them, he wrapped his arms around her waist and drew her close. This time he didn’t hesitate--with great care not to move her bandages, his mouth found her lips. He held her in his arms for several moments before he stepped back and let his arms fall away from her. “You are so wonderful.”
Stunned but not shaken, she groped for words. “I am doing remarkably well. Much better than I thought I would. I think it’s because of you. Having you here with me has meant so much. I hope I’m not taking you away from other things.” Her eyes followed his movements as he took her hand and led her to the table.
“Not at all, I’ve never been happier.” He took the food in separate small containers from the box, set them out, and then opened the bag. “Having you back home, seeing you again, is more than I hoped for.” He took out a larger white one and opened it. The smell of Bar-B-Q ribs filled the kitchen with its spicy fragrance.
