Oh ... it's depressing, in a way, as much as the jolly me would ever allow herself to be depressed. Around every corner there's some sad-sack lame-o jerk who's bored with his domesticity. It's even truer with the middle-aged ones like this, looking for their second wind. 'Come on, chicky, make me feel like a man again.' They prey on young single females like me.
I see it a lot at work, too. There's a guy in the Internet department, he with his salt-and-pepper hair and moustache and his tan skin. He's at least in his forties, too, and he has that look in his eyes. I remember him at a party at the publisher's house last summer, the very party where I first hit it off with my fiance. Before Dirk got there, when I was just hanging with friends and kicking back with some merlot, we were playing the check-out game, Mr. Internet and I. He looked at me. I looked at him. He's darn handsome; I can't deny that. Maybe he's too handsome for his own good, maybe that's why he can't be faithful, because I know full well that he's married with kids. He has no problem, though, with letting the young redhead in the white miniskirt and black crop top know he's interested. I found him especially attractive that night, and if he would not have been married, I might've been all over him like that good tan. In my own little Rubi way.
But he was, and is, married. And that's one of my rules: Never anyone's boyfriend or husband. I've never broken it.
