Many business leaders today are scrapping complicated strategic initiatives in favor of simpler business plans focused on the people and processes that really matter. The shift is hardly news to Davis Woodruff, PE, CMC, however; he has been coaching managers and executives for more than two decades. The results of those efforts can now be found in his new book, Taking Care of the Basics: 101 Success Factors for Managers (now available through www.barnesandnoble.com, www.amazon.com, and www.authorhouse.com , www.bamm.com and other booksellers).
Taking Care of the Basics provides managers and leaders with simple, easy-to-apply tools and tips in digestible quantities. In addition, Woodruff draws upon his education, three decades spent in management, leadership and consulting, plus a deep spiritual insight to provide one-of-a-kind approach to dealing with this popular topic. Each chapter is divided into six distinct sections:
Working definition of each term;
Success factors;
Application of that chapter’s lesson;
Verses to consider;
How to be more successful; and
“To Do List” suggestions for implementation
In a world of “information overload” and theory, Taking Care of the Basics is a refreshing, fundamental, common sense, easy to read, practical tool. It provides practical and useable information in an easy to digest form. It’s for the busy manager who doesn’t have time to read lengthy volumes of management and leadership theory! It helps you get on with the job of leading people and managing processes to make you more successful in your job.
Excerpt
Expectations Success Factor 22
Working Definition: The five or six key requirements that must be met for a person to be successful on their job. This is not a job description of detailed tasks, but rather the major requirements for success on the job.
Success Factor: Every employee has a need and a right to know what their boss expects. Managers have a responsibility to define and communicate expectations for each employee. Failure to do so leads to frustration and poor performance.
Application: An organization doesn’t function well with “MRM—mind reading management.” People must know what’s expected.
Verse to Consider: Micah 6:8
Being More Successful: Do you know what’s expected of you? Have you defined expectations for each of your employees? Make a list of each employee and what you expect of them, and communicate your expectations to each one.
To Do: Clearly communicate your expectations to each of your employees.
Once walked, the path of the Inner Compass leaves everyone transformed. Uncover a future with unlimited leadership possibilities. Master your ego
