In Indignity of Survival, Jeanie duGal cleverly lets us in on some of those secrets as the living, breathing character she has created struggles against the villains of the present whilst unravelling the mystery of her past.
It is difficult, reading duGal’s work, to fathom whether its grace, style, depth, humour and ability to spring surprises created Nellie or vice versa. Certainly, her tightly written, intelligent narrative is the ideal vehicle for an unforgettable heroine. You close the book, breathless and hoping to see more of Nellie Tiebert and of Jeanie duGal.
