Our research leads us to believe that healing presence is a type of subtle energy---that is, an unseen force that no one has yet learned how to directly measure or predict. Subtle energy in healing environments is minimally addressed in psychological and medical literatures, although it has had the attention of frontier physicists since early in the 20th century. Clients' experiences of somatosensory healing presence have been mostly overlooked, and experiences outside of a clinical setting have been met with skepticism at best. This book explores experiencings of healing presence as a broad spectrum of subtle energy phenomenon that may have tremendous potential for changing one's relationship with suffering.

So she did her exam and at one point she stepped back from the table and she said, "Well, butchered is the right word. I don't know how he did this, and I don't know if I can fix it." There was a shift that happened in that because she wasn't judging me, she was joining with me, and that made all the difference. And the walls just totally disappeared at that point. And my consciousness was much more back in my body....In that moment I really felt that we had become partners in figuring out where we could go from there....I think that why that stands for me as a healing presence experience is because I was so not expecting it, and I was so guarded, and so not ready or willing to allow anybody to be compassionate, or empathetic with me, or to care. When I left there I realized that I was feeling held....And that sense of being held remained with me for a long time, hours at least. It was really strong.
