Introduction As a fiction writer I’m asked all the time, “Where do you get the ideas for your books?” I say, “The Universe tells me the story and I’m merely a conduit.” Most people think I’m pulling their leg. Mothership At one time I was on a highway driving to a writers’ conference. What was on my mind? Writing my next book of course and what direction I should go. That’s when I noticed the license plate of the car in front of me. It read, “MY PLNET.” Below the plate on the bumper the maker of the car revealed, “SATURN.” Of course, at the time I thought ‘How cute is that? My planet–Saturn!’ I passed the car. Moments later I advanced upon an SUV. Its license plate read, “MTHRSHP.” ‘Mothership?’ This got my attention. I arrived late at the conference’s dinner banquet. The group I had planned on sitting with didn’t have a space for me at their table. So, I sought a seat at a nearby table, and sat beside a gentleman I had never met before. I struck-up a conversation with him, and he started talking about past-life regressions. Certainly not the most common dinner subject matter, but it got my attention because in my second book, Back to Salem, my character has a past-life regression. In the research for my novel I read Many Lives Many Masters by Brian Weiss, which explores past lives through hypnotic regressions. “Have you read Many Lives Many Masters?” I asked him. He smiled, then told me he was not only familiar with the book, but he was a psychoanalyst who worked with Brian Weiss and assisted him in writing the regression protocol that Mr. Weiss used in Many Lives Many Masters. At the time I just thought, ‘What are the chances of meeting someone who helped develop the regression method I used in my book Back to Salem?’ Of course I knew it wasn’t a coincidence. I realized in that moment what a serendipitous event it had been to meet this man. After all, if my space had been reserved at the table where I had intended to sit, I would never have met him. I smiled at him and asked, “You’re a psychoanalyst? What do you specialize in?” “ET abduction counseling,” he said with a straight face. The hair stood on the back of my neck and I smiled. Alas, the real reason for the exchange. It came together, I had been asking the Universe for help with the direction of my next book . . . My planet, Saturn, Mothership . . . ET abduction . . .
