Excerpt
It was the blackest night of the summer; after the full moon was gone and before the new moon had started to wink down from above, and there was not a light in the sky bright enough to illuminate any part of the boy’s room. The shadow was invisible in the dark and while the boy’s even breathing made it clear his friend was deep asleep, he was torn by what he was going to do. Was shadow doing the right thing?
He loved the boy like no shadow had ever loved his partner. He was sure of that. He had even decided that it wasn’t even really stealing because he belonged with the boy and if he had the whistle, and the boy had him, then the boy really had the whistle and hadn’t lost it at all.
The shadow thought it was a pretty weak argument, but was determined to have his friend back and would not allow any silly whistle to stand in the way.
Just after midnight the shadow slipped out of its corner and silently slid onto the boy’s bed, past the bedpost, around the teddy bear and over the pillow until he had positioned himself right in front of his friend’s face. Then, as the lad slept, the shadow inhaled, actually stealing the music right off the boy’s lips.
