Years ago, when I started making jewelry, I bought whatever components I thought were attractive, knowing very little about what I was purchasing. But I’m a curious person, with a special interest in unusual or little-known facts. So I began researching gemstones, looking at the folklore surrounding them, as well as the technical information.
Not only did I learn lots of fascinating facts, I also discovered that my sales increased when I could relate interesting little tidbits of information to my customers. Later I began putting what I knew in writing, and voila — a book was born!
Although I’ve included what I know about the chemical composition of the pretty little pieces of stones we all enjoy working with, this is by no means an authoritative or comprehensive reference. Additionally, I’ve described only a few of the most common gems—there are dozens of others equally lovely.
Many of you probably know stories and “magic” properties other than the ones I’ve included. I followed a guideline of only using information that I could find in two independent sources. You can use what I’ve written to verify or supplement your own knowledge.
There’s been renewed interest in recent years in the healing properties of gemstones and crystals. Many good references exist if this is your focus. I’ve remained primarily with the older and folkloric uses, including a few comments on traditional healing properties.
Each chapter is independent of the others, making it easy for you to check out your favorites quickly. However, taken as a whole, the book will give you an overview of the basics of gems and jewelry, increasing your pleasure in making, buying/selling, wearing, and caring for your beautiful creations.
