"I have this great passage I like to read at some readings that talks about how poetry is undervalued, that few people pursue it, and that the state of poetry today is appalling. All throughout the reading there are people giving the "Yeah!" and "Amen to that!" Then I give the date it was written: 1905. Ninety-five years of change and the things people say about poetry haven't changed much. Poets have a history, maybe even a mantra of woes: that they are not accepted by others, never published enough, overly sensitive and maybe I'll die someday and someone will find and publish my work and I'll be great.
