Chapter One
The graveyard shift started as usual on that late summer night in 1996 as two of the finest cops in Chicago slowly patrolled the streets of the near north side. Long time friends, partners, and Vietnam vets, they had joined the Chicago Police force together years earlier.
Buster, weighing 250 pounds, built like a barrel, with light brown hair and green eyes, is like a big old cuddly teddy bear. Standing 6’1” tall, he is generally caring and gentle, however when he is on the job, his personality becomes aggressive, daring, chancy and even reckless at times. Many of the chances he takes are frowned upon by the Department, but they make him one of the best cops in Chicago.
His partner Bobby, on the other hand had become quite the opposite. After his marriage and the birth of his daughter, Mindy, Bobby realized that he needed to change his life style for his family. He turned into a gentle, quite conservative cop, both on duty and off. With these new responsibilities Bobby took the time to evaluate each situation before acting.
Unlike Buster, Bobby was a small individual of 5’11”, 150 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Their contrasting personalities, combined with their knowledge of the streets, and long time friendship made them the best team in the Department.
Working the graveyard shift could be extremely slow at times, and this night seemed to be going in that direction. Slow uneventful nights like this one would always make Buster nervous and edgy. Every time Buster put on his uniform he would immediately begin looking for action. It was almost to the point of addiction with him.
The night seemed to stand still as they slowly patrolled their assigned area, when suddenly; breaking the silence, shots rang out through the blackness. Feeling as though they were back in the rice paddies of Vietnam, the adrenaline began to flow as the two men quickly reacted. The only thing they could see from their squad car through the darkness was the distant flash of gunfire. Buster exploded into action as he pushed on the gas pedal and sped in the direction of the flashes. Reaching an area, Buster slammed on the brakes, bringing the squad to a halt. He jumped out of the squad car and ran toward the flashes of light.
“Bobby, there’s two. I’ll get the guy running west. You get the other one!”
Bobby knew the danger that was ahead as he hesitated. The instant he opened the door he knew he should call for backup, but something deep inside of him made him react to Buster’s voice.
“Bobby, he’s getting away. Get him!”
Another shot rang out close to the squad.
Reacting to the sound, Bobby jumped from the squad, and ran in direction of the flash.
“Stop! Police! Stop!”
Out running the man Bobby jumped on his back, wrestled with him as he attempted to get into a large black car parked down the street. Bobby forced the man to the ground, placing his knee in the middle of his back as he reached for his handcuffs.
Hearing a loud noise from an alley, Buster abruptly stopped and turned, realizing that a third man had appeared out of nowhere. Turning his head from side to side, he quickly lost both of them in the darkness. Concerned for his partner, Buster holstered his weapon as he rushed back to find Bobby with his knee in the small of the man’s back. Huffing from the chase Buster asked
“You okay?”
“Yeah, I am but I don’t think he is. He hit the ground hard.”
“Did you call for backup?”
“No. You better call it in.”
Buster looked down at the man Bobby had in handcuffs.
“Do you know who you have under you?”
“No. I haven’t seen his face.”
“It’s Johnny Sclamencio.”
“Who?”
“You know, Scarface Johnny. He’s one of the Chicago’s family hit man.”
“No shit, I thought he would be bigger!”
“Hay, Scarface, you look shorter then down there. How much you up to now? 180 pounds?”
“Fuck you McCloud!”
“Oh my, is that any way to talk. You still don’t have any fears at all do you.”
“No and if I didn’t have this ape on me I would shoot your ass just for looking at me the wrong way.”
“Buster I think he is a little pissed that I messed up his greasy black hair.”
“Maybe you’re right but he looks a little different. What’s that, a mustache to hide the scar down the side of your face?”
“You got nothin’ you fuck. I was just walking to my car.”
“Bobby, did I ever tell you how he got his name, scare face Johnny?”
“No, and now isn’t the time.”
“Well he loves knives, and when he was a kid, he ran into some guy faster then him with a knife. Rumor has it the Scare face Johnny wanted the guys money and it turned out to be 50 cents.”
“Buster, not now. You need to find the other two, and call for backup!”
“Didn’t you call it in?”
“No I just reacted!”
“Shit. Just like old times.”
“Just call it in.”
“Okay, Okay. I lost the other two in the alley anyway.”
“Buster, call for backup!”
“Okay, I’ll get the fucking squad and radio for backup.”
“Hey Buster”
“What.”
“I thought there was only one guy.”
“Yeah, so did I but another one came out of nowhere. I’ll be right back.”
“Okay.”
With Scar face safely under control, Buster quickly retrieved the squad car and pulled it up along side the suspect’s car. With the blue lights of the squad car flashing and Buster halfway out of the door, he radioed the dispatcher for backup.
“Dispatch. Charley 128. Over.”
“Charley 12. Go ahead.”
“Dispatch. Gunfire at 28th and Halsted. Send back up.”
“10-4.”
While on his radio, he noticed a man dressed in dark clothing making a break into an alley close to the one he had just come from. Buster threw the mike down on the seat.
“There goes the other perp down the street!”
“Did you call for backup?”
“Yeah.”
“Well get him!”
Jumping out of the squad car Buster drew his weapon, and ran toward the alley.
“Stop! Police! Stop!”
Gunfire once again rang out as he reached the corner of the building. Buster ducked down behind a garbage bin and looked through the darkness. His eyes moved slowly as he searched the area but his efforts proved to be unsuccessful.
