Professor Ralph Anspach, inventor of Anti-Monopoly, took on the purported owners of the Monopoly game, Parker Brothers/General Mills, in a 10-year-litigation war over his right to use the word "monopoly" in a game title. He won, establishing new patent law. In the process of the litigation, he discovered that a fake inventor of Monopoly had stolen the game from a group of Quakers who were among thousands of men and women who played small m monopoly as a folk game, and who put the Atlantic City property names on the board and wrote the playing rules. The owners of Parker Brothers and then General Mills after General Mills acquired Parker Brothers, knew about the scam, but instead of revealing it. tey paid the fake inventor to keep his mouth shut. The fake inventor became a millionaire from his theft, while the Quakers and other originators of the game got nothing. Incidentally, the Quakers played the game as a fun way of learning the evils of landlordism, capitalism, and greedy real estate acquisition that leads to owning a monopoly.
