Excerpt
Savannah was back. Without opening her eyes, she knew she was back in Grandma's house. In one fluid movement, she sat up, swiveled her hips, and rested her feet on the floor.
"Hey, now! Easy there. What's the rush?"
It was Tom, in her bedroom...again. He had pulled the living room rocker in, and now reached over to pat her shoulder, probably to keep her from rising.
She gave him a sheepish grin. "I seem to be making a habit of this, aren't I?" Taking several deep breaths, she was relieved to inhale the nostalgic smell of Grandma's old house instead of the exotic heliotrope. Still, there was a faint odor of the perfumed scent about.
The shadows on his face intensified. "When did you have your last physical?"
"I'm okay, really. It's just that...." Ouch. Should she tell him about her dream? Dreaming didn't accurately describe what she was experiencing. It was more like visions of the future.
But she had to trust someone. She took another breath. "That man, Jackson Zeuch...he said words that came straight out of my...you know, nightmare. I guess it startled me."
Tom leaned back in the rocker. "Savannah, I don't know how to break the news to you but Jackson Zeuch is Jacko."
"Jacko!" She automatically clenched her fists and gulped down hard. "Man, oh man."
Jacko really was the monster from her dream. Subconsciously, she must have recognized him. And that also explained Tom's odd behavior. He didn't want Jacko to know who she was. Imagine, Jacko turning up as Tom's business associate. The coincidences were piling on pretty thick.
"This is getting really strange." She made a move to get off the bed, but he stopped her again.
"Your lips are darker than when I carried you in here." He jumped out of the chair and gently lifted her chin up to his face. "Yes, they're stained purple."
He then trailed his finger over her lips, but his fingerpads revealed no purplish discoloration. The sensation caused her to shiver.
"Let me see your tongue."
Him being so close was causing her heart to hammer out an SOS of lust. The thrust of his jaw, the strong line of his nose, the deepening blue of his eyes....
Get a grip, Savannah, she scolded herself. He's not romantically interested in you.
She squirmed under his relentless gaze. "Um, my mom always told me it was rude to stick out my tongue!"
"Doctor's orders, Savannah."
"Oh, are you my personal physician?" She liked the sound of that. Looking up at him, she noticed a slight flushing of his dark skin.
"Your tongue, Miss Alexander."
He pressed his own lips firmly together as if he was annoyed. But woman's intuition said something other than irritation disturbed him. Maybe he wasn't as indifferent to her as he let on.
"Okay, you win." She allowed her mouth to drop a little to reveal her tongue. If this wasn't embarrassing, she didn't know what was.
Tom pulled down on her jaw for a better view. "Hmmn, your tongue is also stained purple. Do you know why that is?"
Being examined like a microscopic specimen did nothing to improve her frame of mind. She freed her chin from his grasp. "You're the doctor. You tell me."
Frowning, he glanced around the room. "Looks like a strong dye, possibly coming from--"
"Wine. The finest wine of Poseidia." Savannah turned around to peer at her image in the bureau mirror. Her lips did have a vermilion tinge. Somehow she really did meet Khumose and drink that wine. Somehow, in another time, another place.
How very, very interesting.
