On Friday evening they made love and were lying spent in each other’s arms. Ramm brushed the hair from Jeannie’s cheek and kissed her, his attention completely focused upon her. He wanted all of her, not just stolen moments when she could spare a few minutes to be with him.
Jeannie had just glanced at the clock on the nightstand and was compelling herself to leave the warmth of Ramm’s arms. “I hate to leave you,” she said, hugging him tightly and winging butterfly kisses over his face.
“Then don’t leave me, Jeannie. Stay the night with me.” It was a plea, one he’d made many times before.
“Oh, Ramm, please don’t. Let’s not go through this again. Every night ends like this and I go away feeling guilty.”
“Then tell me why you can’t or won’t stay. Just tell me why,” he shouted in frustration.
“Because my parents need me!” Jeannie yelled back, blurting out more than she intended. “They both are disabled and unable to do for themselves. Everything I do is for the single purpose of keeping them out of a nursing home.”
He looked at her as if she had slapped him. “How disabled are they?” he asked suspiciously.
“Dad has Alzheimer’s and Mom has crippling arthritis,” she admitted quietly.
He looked like she had slapped him. “You lied to me,” he accused, forgetting that his own deceit of wanting to get her pregnant outweighed what she had withheld.
“I never lied to you. I just didn’t tell you.”
“Withholding the truth is the same as a lie,” he argued bitterly, springing from the bed and stalking back and forth across the floor, his face unusually red. This shattering information messed up all his plans. He wanted his trust fund and needed an heir to gain it, but he didn’t want a ready-made family. He never realized that to have Jeannie he would have to take on the responsibility of her disabled parents.
“Why are you so angry?” Jeannie exclaimed. “It doesn’t affect you. I’m the one who is shuffling my schedule daily so I can rush over here to be with you.”
“It does affect me, affects us both. I had been thinking of something more permanent for us,” he quarreled. “I never knew that your parents would be part of the deal.”
“Deal! You think that is what this is all about? You think my sleeping with you is some sort of deal? To hell with you, Ramm Prescott!” she shouted, jumping from the bed and jerking on her clothing.
