An agnostic fertility doctor comes into possession of a fiber from the Shroud of Turin, and grafts DNA from it into a virgin's egg, which he re-implant. Thirty years later, a man appears teaching an old gospel, which the establishment fears and hates.
When Justin Walton, an agnostic fertility doctor, comes into contact with the Shroud of Turin, a fateful chain of events begins that, thirty years later, collides with the life of lackadaisical college student, Sean Early. During a strange summer of romance and ill consequences, Sean is drawn to an itinerant preacher, Jesse, a man with no official identity. Thus begins a momentous event, foretold in ancient scrolls found thirty years before and mostly destroyed the next day, marked by danger, as well as, wondrous events, which will change the course of human history – for better or worse.

The afternoon was drawing on when Bridgett Stone suddenly realized she had been working around a stone with an unusual shape! As she carefully dug around it, her mind began conjuring images of glory and fame. This was it! She continued, moving a thimbleful of soil, brushing, barely touching it. Suddenly disappointment flooded in upon her. It was just another stupid rock! Though her spirits were dashed, she persisted. Half an hour later, she stopped. Excitement again touched her with its warm fingers. This was not a rock one would really expect eight feet down, but she could not yet tell if it was something man had crafted a couple thousand years ago or just a rock displaced by nature. So far it was rough, but the fact that it would not yield was the cause of her pounding blood and flushed face. Bit by bit, she cleaned away the sand and smaller rocks, of which they were so fond.
Chandler Carrington’s voice, coming from just above, startled her.
“What are you doing down there? Making love to that rock?”
“Are you jealous?”
“Imagine what I could do for you.”
“Chandler, why don’t you give up? Go back to your hole and have your way with it. It might be as excited about you as I am.”
“Ouch! We are mercilessly cruel today. I am a wounded man, Bridgett; have some mercy.”
“You came looking in my hole uninvited, not vice versa.”
Carrington laughed deeply. “Dang, Bridgett, you sure know how to make a guy crazy. Speaking of crazy, what do you think about them shutting us down?”
“Not much. We can’t do anything about it. Wow! I just thought of something. We are going to get our credit, aren’t we?”
After a moment’s thought, her admirer responded: “Oh, I’m sure Doctor Greene will give us full credit. We have spilled enough sweat for two summers. Heck, maybe it’s best for us to quit before the site plays itself out. It will save face for Doctor Greene and nobody can accuse us of amateurish enthusiasm.”
“Amateurish enthusiasm? You do have a way with words. Of course, you are right, but I would have liked to see something come of all this work!”
“Same here, but sometimes you win; sometimes you lose. How about us, Bridgett? Do I win your heart or do I mean nothing to you?”
“As far as I’m concerned, you’re just another moron in pants, Chandler. Now, why don’t you go back to your hole like a good little boy, and let’s see if we can become famous.”
“Very well. See you at lunchtime.”
“We’ll see. Go discover something.”
Chandler lingered, but she returned to her work, choosing to ignore him. Finally he wandered back toward his hole.
As she brushed the dirt away from the rock, it began to look more like human hands had shaped it. Her excitement grew, and she tried to control her trembling. Uncovering the rock as rapidly as she dared, she began to see possible impressions left by quarrying. Resisting the urge to call Doctor Greene, she continued to move back the heavy sand and gravel encasing it.
Despite her excitement, she could not get Chandler Carrington off her mind. Try as she would, she could not understand how he could be interested in her. He was rich, personable and handsome. She held no illusions about who she was. His apparent lack of interest in Stacy Grant, who was crazy for him, also puzzled her. Stacy was everything Bridgett was not. Her efforts became more vigorous as she swept the material away from the rock. Stacy is a cover girl. She brushed harder. She is built like a showgirl. Bridgett tossed her brush down and grabbed her little rock hammer. Stacy is intelligent and clever. Bridgett tapped away at the debris that held the rock in place. Stacy’s breasts are large and hold every man’s eyes when she walks. Bridgett carelessly swung her hammer and struck a hard piece of the concrete-like debris.
