150 authentic Ozark recipes arranged in a two-week menu format. Additional stories of cooking, canning and living in the Ozarks during the Great Depression.
The Boston Mountains are the most rugged peaks in the Ozarks, some reaching as high as 2500 feet. They are named the Bostons because back 150 years or more, the slang term "it's the boston," meant a hard way to go. It fits the rugged wilderness where settlement began in 1828.
These hardy people raised their own food, the cooks knew how to fill the table with hearty fare, and the hard working people ate well. This book shares those recipes, collected by the author's mother over an 80 year period.
Questions such as: What are lightning jars? Where did the Dutch Oven come from? How do you butcher a turtle for cooking? How to raise bees, and many more are answered.
